Hi! I found your blog through the wtnv cosplay tag, and I was wondering if we could talk for a second. I'm doing a presentation at the national pop culture conference about night vale and how it treats/represents diversity, and how the fan community is interacting with those ideals. I'd really love to get your opinion as a person of colour who has done wtnv cosplay on how that aspect of wtnv has (or hasn't!) affected your decision to or experience with cosplaying night vale. thanks so much!
omg okay first of all, i feel really honored that you asked me this ^^ well, when i first started listening to the show, i was really happy that carlos was a person of color. don’t get me wrong, i don’t think race plays a part in cosplaying any character at all and i think that anyone can cosplay any character they wish regardless of their skin color. but, i love how diverse the characters are in wtnv. (and as a queer, i’m glad that they are an openly gay couple.) but, i was glad there was a character i could essentially relate to and easily cosplay. :D
Dev: haha no don't worry! that was sarcasm. my conversation partner was all "BDSM IS SOLELY FOR ASSHOLE HET GUYS TO TAKE OUT THEIR ABUSE FANTASIES ON """CONSENTING""" WOMEN." and yeah, there is abuse in the kink community....... but seriously not EVERY couple is in that situation. they literally said they didn't care about the exceptions? (eg non-straight kink people, trans people, dom women and sub men, groups with more than two partners, etc.) and then I looked at their blog and they were like "I wouldn't feel safe with a trans woman in my bathroom!!!!" and I was like "hahahaha fuck you" I'm aspiring-ly into kink? I have a definite interest (I think a lot of BDSM stuff is p sexy) and I have a definite thing for dominative femme people and submissive masc people....... and "unusual" arrangements (eg sub top/dom bottom)
Dev, I'm not the person to talk to about this!!! Leon (constantlyrambling) is. ETA: also no it's okay!! it was in response to anti-kink things and I ended up just being Jimmy Laughing Alone With Ice Cream because the other person was a TERF (ofc) and I just don't take TERFs seriously any more. they're like clowns. funny and a little unnerving at best, murderous at worst.
Dev, I don't hang much around it any more, but there are creeps who are like "@cecilbaldwin MARRY CARLOS I MEAN DYLAN (;" and all the white vale/whitececilonly people and the abuse-glorifying people and stuff. and the person who wanted Carlos to be played by Benedict Cumberbatch.
@devin: they're horrible misogynistic pieces of trash and are some of the few people who fetishize male homosexuality, unnecessarily comment on other people's lives like they KNOW THEM PERSONALLY, and do some horrifically creepy shit. and they were racist/homophobic as hell before I quit with their endless uses for the n-word and the f-slur and uGH like the only fandoms that compare are Homestuck and WtNV (sadly D: )
