Knowing your library
I am in a public library right now and I am trying to post a photo to my tumblr that I took on my cell phone. I took the photo here in the library. My phone is not smart enough to handle the tumblr app, so for this class I take photos and then upload them to tumblr later on.
tumblr does not support drag-and-drop from this kind of secure computer, only adding photos from a website. Would I really have to place my image in a app that assigns it a url in order to post? In this case the library public terminals do not allow external devices to connect to their PCs to protect them from viruses, the dreaded public folder with gazillions of files, and other things. But if a patron needs a file from their device what can they do?
What if I were working on a paper? Would Google docs be my only option? Google Docs would only work if the document were already in the cloud, not if the patron showed up at the library with the file on a flash drive. Someone needs to alert patrons to the limitations of public workstation use prior to their arrival in the library.
I have used library terminals almost as much as I use my own laptop, but in retrospect I have never tired to use info that I have brought with me.
How does this type of security affect workstation use, especially for homework and school use?
