We all know that in "Hansel and Gretel" the witch is supposed to be the double of the step-mother/mother. But when Lisbeth Zwerger did her own illustrations of the fairytale, she did something I have never truly seen elsewhere...

The witch in this version (beyond being uniquely clad in white instead of the traditional black) is still a "supernatural double" of one of the parents, but not of the mother...

... she is a double of the father.

The Legend of Rosepetal

I am tempted to say this is actually the last Zwerger illustrated book on my shelves, but I’m not entirely confident. However, this is a good one to end on if it is actually the last. Written by German Romantic poet Clemens Maria Brentano in 1852 as Das Märchen von Rosenblättchen, this lovely lyrical fairy tale is brought to life by Lisbeth Zwerger’s gorgeous illustrations. As with many of her earlier works, the illustrations for Rosepetal are dominated by atmospheric murky watercolor washes. But rather than weighing everything down, the muddy backgrounds provide a sharp contrast to the pale delicate features of her characters’ faces, highlighting their looks of joy, concern, disappointment, or malice like a frame. Together, Brentano’s Romantic tale and Zwerger’s evocative illustrations are a delightful pairing.

And it even has a signed bookplate.

This is such a cute little book! Now this is also an exemplary book of a story that involves both the text and the illustrations. The drawings are very charming and unique, and I love how they are used and integrated into the story of Wonderland. The book is filled with them, which is not something that usually happens. It makes the story entertaining and delightful from beginning to end. I would say this is one of the best books to get to children so they can fully enjoy and embrace Wonderland and all its wonders. Definitely, this is a must have!
