SYDNEY, Australia—Feb 16, 2015--Founder and CEO Manish R. Jain has announced the launch of List.cc, a new classified advertisements website which promises to make classified buying and selling easier, safer and more transparent.
Having recently moved here from Silicon Valley, where Jain used to work for Google, they felt the pangs of selling stuff online first hand. "Craigslist and Gumtree haven't innovated since their launch before the 2000s," said Co-founder Sunandita Nijhawan, formerly a Google Adwords strategist. "There's no privacy consideration or moderation, so the sites are full of scammers and are inconvenient to use to say the least. Everybody is looking for a better alternative."
For Jain and Nijhawan, list.cc is how classifieds should be. Designed as a social platform, list.cc sorts listings based on users' interests and provides a news feed, similar to Facebook's, which shows activity on the platform. Hence, popular listings on list.cc are more visible than others. The platform provides a completely open and transparent environment, with every question, bid or offer visible to all members. This keeps scammers out and promotes collaboration.
Similar to eBay, sellers can opt to list items through "auctions," for things they would like to get rid of quickly, or "fixed price," for those where the seller has a specific amount they would like the item to go for. All users can see offers made by others, and buyers are able to see other interested buyers and how much they are offering.
List.cc also adds a robust search feature and a unique interface, making browsing both faster and more efficient than existing classified sites. Searching with hashtags instead of categories, similar to social media sites, buyers are able to browse multiple listings simultaneously. They can also "heart" items they like, making it easy to come back to them later.
Another concern for Jain and Nijhawan was increasing seller privacy. Unlike existing sites, List.cc doesn't publish private information like phone numbers or email and home addresses.
For Jain and Nijhawan, the launch of the website is phase one of a service they will eventually make available on other devices. "We're going to follow this web launch with launch on both iPhone and Android, making us the only classifieds startup with such a great device coverage," said Jain.
Jain and Nijhawan realize they're not the first to attempt a better approach to classified selling, but are confident List.cc will succeed where others have failed. "This is a tough market to break into, and we're in this long term," said Jain. He and Sunandita are committed to the success of a site which is safe and easy to use, respects privacy, adds social communications and brings a new level of transparency for this market segment.
