James Gould

This receipt dated Litchfield 1801 Apr 9 is signed by James Gould and verifies that Elijah Boardman paid fifty seven dollars for Atwater & Townsend of New Haven “by the hands of Boardman & Seymour.” By this time, James Gould had joined Tapping Reeve as an instructor at the Litchfield Law School. Perhaps he was also doing legal work for Atwater & Townsend.

So maybe Boardman’s store predates German Chocolate Cake by a few years, but he was definitely selling chocolate. According to the National Day Calendar, German Chocolate Cake dates to 1852 and a particular type of chocolate being sold by the Baker Chocolate Company. The company itself had been around a lot longer, Walter Baker, one of the grandsons of the founder attended the Litchfield Law School!
