matthew mcnulty in little ashes is an interesting contrast to the self-loathing closeted gay bully trope. he's actually so straight that he can't even let a random guy suck him off in the shadows and it infuriates him. he's jealous that he can't achieve the same depth of intimacy with his closeted gay best friend that a romantic lover could and he deals with his crippling jealousy by lashing out with vitriol and violence. and its so crazy that he's like...punishing the man he cares about so much by subjecting him to aggressive homophobic rants meant to keep him cowering in the closet.

↓ this man is fighting back tears bc he's witnessing his intellectual soulmate be tenderly domestic with someone who isn't him. on this night he's soooo mad that he can't get himself to suck a dick and he's about to make it everyone's problem
