G:being six years old

SIX YEARS OLD AND I WANT TO SCRATCH MY SKIN OFF INTO SOMETHING PRETTY. SIX YEARS OLD AND I MY RED TURTLENECK FROM THE THRIFT STORE SWALLOWS ME UP AND I CAN’T MAKE EYE CONTACT WITH ANYONE. I’M AFRAID TO BE UNGRATEFUL BUT I’M AFRAID TO BE MADE FUN OF. SIX YEARS OLD AND IT’S MY FIRST TIME FEELING UNCOMFORTABLE IN MY OWN SKIN OR MAYBE I WAS JUST BORN THIS WAY. 

SIX YEARS OLD AND I CHIPPED MY TWO FRONT TEETH ON THE HANDLEBARS OF MY BIKE. I BLACKED OUT FOR A FEW SECONDS AND THE WORLD IS BLACK & SEEPING & ENDLESS & I’M BACK IN MY BACKYARD. SIX YEARS OLD AND TWO CHIPPED FRONT TEETH, SMILE AS BRIGHT AS THE SUN.

SIX YEARS OLD WHEN MY MOM BURSTS LIKE A VOLCANO, FROTHING OVER WITH ANGER, SHARDS OF IT HITTING ME IN MY STOMACH, IN MY HEART. LODGED IN MY BODY FOREVER TO REMAIN. SHE KICKS MY SISTER OUT BECAUSE SHE THOUGHT THERE WAS CAT HAIR IN THE WATER SHE ASKED FOR AND MY SISTER WAS TOO TIRED TO REFILL THE CUPS. SIX YEARS OLD AND I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT’S HAPPENING EXCEPT I AM ACHE & FEAR AND I WATCH WITH WIDE EYES, TELLING MY SISTER TO COME BACK AND LOOKING AT MY MOM FOR EXPLANATION AND RECEIVING NONE.

P: waking up in springtime

i like it the best when the sky is the color of peach sherbet. i like ice-cream, i like the way it tastes. how it melts and how it sticks to skin, like sweetness is a touch. warm fruity lips kiss and sticky hands. i like the way frozen strawberries taste. cold and cold and ice and bitter-sweet-bitter-sweet. i like licking the spoon clean. it tastes like a fruit punch kiss.

in springtime, i can’t breathe. my lungs constrict and my heart bleeds from paper-clip cuts. in springtime, i can’t stop crying and every breath is a wheeze. coughing makes my chest ache. in springtime, i do what i do best: ache & ache & ache. 

i like it best when the sky is the color of peach sherbet and life splits open in my hands like a mango. i like it when my hands are sticky and my mouth is full of sweet juice and my mom calls me to the kitchen for the seconds.

i like the sour taste of the mango seed and how it’s bigger than my entire palm.

in springtime, my lungs constrict and all i know how to do is ache & ache & ache & ache. i still remember the day the clouds were rolled thick like dough and the entire world was pink like peach sherbet, and orange like mango.

in springtime, i want to eat mangoes and lick the juice from my fingers. tell my mom we’re going to have a mango tree in our background. the sky looks like pink sherbet and my heart aches & aches & aches.
