Bucky loved kids. He all but jumped at the chance to look after Mary when Nat mentioned needing someone to watch her, and the more he comes to know her, the more glad he is he agreed. Having someone to offer to paint his nails is such a bittersweet feeling, recalling how his sisters frequently painted his nails when testing new colors.

“Blue’s my favorite color. What kind of blues you got?”

the surprise of the guilt worsens its sting. 

the girl is so... small. long hair and wide eyes and given a chance that faina never got. no one ever came for her. she clawed her way out with blood and chaos and regret. the others in her cohort were all around her age. she feels foolish now that she did not consider there was another generation coming up behind them.

“my name is faina. i am an... associate of your m-” her tongue trips on the word, like a tourist trying to speak the local language. “mother.”

Being quiet as she wandered into the house, Natasha hadn’t seen her little girl for weeks after being 𝐀𝐖𝐀𝐘 with a mission. Mary was seated at her desk, playing with a few toys, so she tip toed into her daughter’s bedroom. Smiling wide she 𝐂𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐒 Mary’s eyes with her hands and chuckles lightly. “Guess who...” a drag of the word as she lifts her hands and kisses her daughter’s cheek. “I’m sorry I’ve been gone, baby girl. But I’m home now.” Bending down she moved to hug Mary, 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐊𝐅𝐔𝐋 to have her daughter back in her arms. Maybe with another bruise and cut on her body, but she was 𝐇𝐎𝐌𝐄 for Mary. She always came home for Mary.

There is a ball of guilt already growing in Steve’s chest, before he can even plan the words he will be saying to the little girl. When Tony had asked who Natasha’s family was a little ball of sunshine came to mind-- or that was what she was to Natasha. The woman charrished her more than she had ever put into words. 

He wasn’t sure how he was going to tell Manya . Wasn’t sure of the words to explain to a young child that Natasha wouldn’t be coming back. He still wasn’t able to get over the idea of it himself. Steve felt that he needed to be the one to tell the young child. He felt as if he owed it to Natasha, to his friend. 

So, it lead to this. “Honey, “ He says to Marry, sitting next to her. They interacted enough, that Steve is sure the young child can tell something is wrong. He’s trying and failing to keep calm, something far too close to home. “We need to talk about mommy sweetheart”

It was way past midnight when Tony came up from his lab. He was working on something for his firm for a change, distracting himself from his sleepless nights, the problems here in the compound and elsewhere. For the past days once he entered the lab, he was just an engineer working on a new portable and sustainable battery for small devices. He finally felt remotely tired when he got up and went upstairs only to find some lights in the living room on.

There he found the smallest inhabitant of the compound - well smallest living one at least - wide awake. Tony grabbed a bowl of grapes and walked in. “Can’t sleep?” He asked her as she flopped down onto the couch. “Me neither. Take some grapes. Wanna watch cartoons with me?”
