Lucky finds at the local convention in Vienna. I usually have to import Nana Mizuki stuff (which is actually cheaper) but finding a live concert blueray (courtesy of my bff @capell0) and a Symphogear GX single (Jiirabe) here in Vienna literally made my day - next to all the amazing artists and the coat my gf bought me.
The Circus of Live
Another great video from the good folks at Live Circus, mainly the gawd Alessio Avezzano.
You might remember his work from the Round Eye "Suntan" video a couple weeks back. Now comes this one, the full set from Friend or Foe's last show ever, back on June 20th at Yuyintang.
Archie over at China Music Radar has a nice interview with the man himself. I'm looking forward to the Airwalker video coming soon, which has been in the works for a while now.
Check out the videos on the Live Circus Youtube page above, follow them on Tumblr livecircusfilm, and worship accordingly.
PS: For Pairs and Hujiahuwei fans who wish to see me bloodily negated, fast forward to around the 43-minute mark in the Friend or Foe video above to satisfy your blood lust.
Nice break, back to writing: TRSM belated 1st year b'day and Round Eye Video
Having enjoyed a month long break from writing owing genuinely to work commitments, it is time for me to continue the blog from where I left off. There is a lot I want to write about, and a lot that has happened in between, but now I plan to ease myself back into the process, pick up the interviewing again and start to bring the reviews in of some upcoming releases on the horizon soon! While I am still in Scotland for another week and conscious that July generally is a quiet month musically over in China, I'm eager to get back to doing what I enjoy!
So use a very Scottish phrase, one could definitely say I am "late to the party" on the primary focus of this entry. Nonetheless, despite everyone getting excited 2 weeks ago about the Round Eye video for their latest track Suntan, the boys are still very active on their tour of the US and Mexico and I guess it still holds relevance. Incidentally, they are touring once more with surf ninjas Daikaijiu, who a year ago they were touring China, Korea and Japan with, which is where one my earliest blog posts comes from. From all accounts, tour going pretty well, but will aim to get a more detailed response from the Round Eye lads on how it's going if they have time out of their schedule to chat about it!
The video (embedded at the end of this piece) itself is a super impressive feat - a well constructed and crafted piece produced by Live Circus which amongst it's animations features Pete riding a seahorse, Jimmy surfing away from a shark and Chachy and Dave dressed in drag (wearing traditional Chinese dresses). This is all well documented but for those of you new to this, the premise of the song and the video, starring Chinese household name actress Wang Lin (who is actually a parent of a student at drummer Jimmy Jack's school, hence her involvement), popularly known as Xue Yi, serves to mock the ridiculous notion that girls with darker skin are somewhat considered an embarrassment, particularly among the Shanghainese men, who they never, ever could possibly marry, which the lyrics hint at somewhat and the superficial nature of these attitudes. So all in a tongue and cheek video starring some of Shanghai's best known musical faces making cameo appearances (Bob, their former bass player, Lenz and Mianmian of Gou Shen and a brief snatch of Elvis too).
The song itself is a forceful surf pop driven song that captures a growing confidence in the band with sharper song writing. Live, this is pure garage rock, so it's interesting seeing the contrast between the versions. Admittedly, the recording itself was a slow burner for me, but then again I was listening to it after some serious long haul flying. Chachy's vocals have a bit more of a crooner style feel to them while live this is more shouty and forceful. Just goes to show that the band are full of surprises and won't be pigeonholed into one category, and cleverly demonstrating their versatility. No one trick ponies amongst this crew, that's for sure!
So well done Round Eye and Live Circus and let's welcome the next phase of DIY with wide open arms!
