NOTHING BUT THIEVES @ UEA, 20/04/2016
After being rescheduled due to their run supporting Muse (which is a MASSIVE deal), Nothing But Thieves returned to Norwich to play a sold out show at the upgraded UEA venue.
Nothing But Thieves are a band that I like; lead singer Conor has a beautiful voice, and they have some great tunes. Their self-titled debut (which you should check out if you haven’t already) is good but they were never a band I listened to all the time.
Their performance was incredible. I didn’t expect the crowd to go as mental as it did, and NBT created one of the biggest mosh pits I’ve ever seen at the UEA. Conor Mason’s vocals were near perfect and he seemed to hit the high notes in tracks such as Excuse Me almost effortlessly. Wake Up Call was also a fun song, and it’s powerful beat got the crowd moving. The band also revealed that Pixies are a huge influence of theirs and are one of the reasons they are all involved in music. Following this, they covered perhaps Pixies’ best known song, Where Is My Mind?, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
While their onstage performance didn’t stand out, the big hits got the best response from the crowd. The Southend five-piece ended their encore with Trip Switch and Ban All The Music, two of their most popular singles. Nothing But Thieves exceeded my expectations; they are a rock band who have broken into the mainstream, and are definitely on the rise. This is band who could very easily be huge.
