Here's a creepy fact about Mansfield Park taken from Fashionable Goodness, Christianity in Jane Austen's England by Brenda S Cox.

When selling a living, "they gave the yearly value and the life expectancy of the incumbent" in an advertisement in the newspaper.

This means that Sir Thomas Bertram had his own brother-in-law's (Mr. Norris) life expectancy estimated and published in the paper!

Also, livings could be sold for five to seven times the yearly income. The income of the Mansfield living is around £800, meaning the sale probably yielded around £4000. If that was all for Tom's gambling, he really got himself into debt!
