Lizard the game 11 years later
(6/2/19) I will start this blog by talking about the second videogame I ever made, Lizard the Game. The first videogame I ever made was the tutorial for the software “Game Maker” which consisted of picking fruits. I was really excited to make a game after I made the tutorial game, but I had no real idea (actually some idea) on how to make one. I wanted to make it the best game I could ever make, but I lacked the skills to make the game actually work the way I wanted. As I continued to place things randomly in my game, I realized that I had come up with a fun game. I finished the first level, and then I made the first boss, and so on and so forth until I finished making a game, although very different from what I imagined. I finished the game and posted it on the game maker sand box of games on May 2008 where almost no one played it.
I showed the game I made to some new friends that I made in high school, and we had a lot of fun playing it. I remember not thinking the game was as fun as it was when I played it with others and learned that “Lizard the Game” had potential into being more than I originally gave it credit. Today (11 years after it has been published) I will play it again to have more to write about.
The file size of the original Lizard the game is only 4 megabytes which I find insane nowadays. Level 1 gives me a large feeling of nostalgia, I pressed F1 to pause the game, and the game information came on. The game information was a pseudo pause screen I used to use on my videogames and it is terrible; but, I noticed this gem on my game’s game information: “Back Story:Lizard, Female Lizard, Rat, and Frog(Guy they met at the beach) were having a fun day at the beach. Untill the duplicator blew up the area our heroes were at. Now they must go in and kick some familiar butt!”. That is correct (”until” was also misspelled), this game does have a story. It also says collectibles give you alternate endings which is a lie, I wasn’t that smart to program endings.
I have beaten this game so many times that I breezed through the levels. However I noticed hyper-realistic blood that I did not put there originally (just kidding). I also pulled off this glitch that allows the player to skip most of level two. In this picture, I want you to notice how bad the rat’s sprite is, I‘ve gotten a lot better at sprites. The boss of this level is an alien that can only be defeated by a Twilight book, which reminds me of my sister who loved the books. I passed through level 3 easy, I am a speed running king at this game. The boss for level 3 are chicken nuggets, I come to question what kind of a person I was at 13 years old to come up with such odd designs. Before long I was with the final boss. I was so fast I beat my own game in 20 minutes and it made me happy to beat it. In all honesty, I messed up by performing this glitch that soft locks the whole game. I like to perform this glitch as a challenge.
After playing this game again all these years later, I had fun reliving the feelings that came to me playing it, I don’t remember much in making the game, but I remember fondly being better than everyone else I played with.
Thank you for reading,
