1906
A young boy dressed in a dirty hanbok ran across the forest, jumping to avoid the thick roots jutting out from the ground.
“I’m going to be late!” He clenched his teeth and ran as fast as he could, despite his worn out shoes.
“LEE JUNGHWAN. WHERE IS LEE JUNGHWAN?!” A sharp voice pierced through the solemn atmosphere.
A man with strong facial features paced back and forth waiting for a reply from the group of frightened boys in front of him.
At that moment, a small figure slips out from the forest behind the team and stood behind someone.
“I’M HERE. Why are you looking for me, sir?” Jung Hwan said slowly, trying not to show his lack of breath.
“…WHY DIDN’T YOU RESPOND EARLIER?!” The man shouted at Jung Hwan, causing the other boys to flinch.
“I…couldn’t hear you. My ear is blocked.” Jung Hwan pointed at his ears and smiled at the man.
With nothing to say, the man just stared at Jung Hwan and went back to the front.
“Same thing today. Go through the obstacle course 20 times and do 300 push up before you can go for lunch.” After giving the orders, he walked off to his office where he has the whole view of the obstacle course.
“The same thing every day…” Jung Hwan muttered to himself.
“Yah! Stop complaining! If we don’t complete it, we won’t have lunch.” Sun woo pushed him lightly before running to complete the course himself.
Sun woo is Jung Hwan’s best friend in the military camp. Sun Woo’s the one that tries to keep Jung Hwan out of trouble and always clean up the mess Jung Hwan creates. Sun Woo doesn’t mind all these hard trainings because he has a strong desire to protect his country, at any cost. Whenever Jung Hwan fails to meet the target for the day and couldn’t have lunch, Sun Woo would secretly pack some food for him even though the portion he received is only enough for one person.
Sun Woo is Jung Hwan’s motivation to continue training in this hell.
“Argh… Arraso!” Jung Hwan mess his hair up in frustration before running to the course.
The obstacle course really challenges your limit. It requires you to crawl, climb, swim, jump, and run for miles. Of course the boys are used to this course. The first few times going through it is actually nothing to them, but 20 times a day is really straining on their bodies. And their average age is only 14. Not forgetting that they have to do 300 push-ups.
By the 18th round of the obstacle course, Jung Hwan is already on the verge of breaking. Sun Woo has already moved on to the push-ups.
“Jung Hwan! Pali! I do not want to share food with you again okay!” Sun Woo shouted from the side.
“You’re noisy.” Jung Hwan replied him angrily; He’s envious of Sun Woo’s stamina. He’s always the first to finish everything.
Jung Hwan clenched his teeth and finished the course.
At Lunch
-Clank!-
Sun woo set his bowl of food down on the table and sat in front of Jung Hwan.
“You improved!” He grinned and stretched his hands out to ruffle Jung Hwan’s hair.
“Yah! Can’t you let me eat in peace! “ Jung Hwan slapped his hands away. “I’m so hungry from that ridiculous training…”
“We’re training for the safety of our country. Let’s persevere on.” Sun Woo said seriously as he looked at Jung Hwan.
“yeah, I know.” Jung hwan poked the small piece of meat on his plate.
As Jung Hwan was looking at the pathetic piece of meat, another piece of meat came into sight.
He looked up to find Sun Woo smiling at him.
“Take it. You need more energy than me. Hwaiting!” He gave another smile and continue eating his food.
Jung Hwan was surprised by his action and looked at him with gratitude.
“Gomowo.”
Four years later, 1910
“-hwan! Jung Hwan, wake up!”
“W-what? Huh? What’s going on?” Jung Hwan said sleepily as he rubbed his eyes to find Sun Woo smiling brightly in front of him.
“I have good news!” He said excitedly, hitting Jung Hwan with every word.
“Yah! Stop hitting me! What is it? Hurry spill it! I want to sleep!” Jung Hwan complained, trying his hardest to stay awake.
“I got called to the Main office just now.” Sun Woo said after calming himself down.
Upon hearing the word “Main Office”, Jung Hwan became wide awake.
“What happened?! What did I do that you have to take the blame for me again?! Ah! I told you to stop helping me! Why can’t you-“b
“Relax! I told you it’s GOOD news!” Sun Woo interrupted Jung Hwan.
Jung Hwan looked at Sun woo, embarrassed at his sudden outburst just now.
“What good news?” He asked the grinning boy sitting in front of him.
“I can leave this place now.”
“What?”
“-clears throat- I said, I can leave this place now.” Sun Woo repeated himself.
“What?! Wait! I-uh…Where are you going?! How?! WHY?!” Jung Hwan grabbed Sun Woo by his clothes, demanding for an explanation.
“Yah! Relax! I’ll tell you! Just release me!” Sun Woo tapped Jung Hwan’s hand, signaling for him to let go.
Jung Hwan, realizing that he lost control, let go of Sun Woo. He stared at Sun woo, waiting for an explanation.
“The trainer said, I was good enough to go to the battle field, so I’m going to the field early this morning.” He explained calmly.
Silence filled the air as Jung Hwan tried to register every word Sun Woo is saying.
“Are you…going to come back?” Jung Hwan broke the silence, his heart beating faster and faster.
“…Most likely, no.”
Those words stabbed Jung Hwan in the heart.
“It’s a war after all.” Sun woo laughed awkwardly.
Jung Hwan just lowered his head. His head hurts. It hurts from the lack of sleep. It hurts from the “good” news he’s hearing from his best friend. It hurts at the thought of losing his best friend.
“Yah…” Sun woo lightly punched Jung Hwan on the arm. “I’ll be back when the war’s over…or maybe we’ll see each other on the field haha!”
Jung Hwan wasn’t listening to what he was saying. He’s too busy fighting his urge to cry. However, he lost the battle.
“Jung Hwan ah! Don’t cry!” Sun woo half-shouted
Jung Hwan covered his mouth, in a desperate attempt to muffle his cries. He curled up his body, as tears dripped down his chin non-stop.
His best friend of 12 years is leaving. And it might be the last time he’s seeing him.
Sun Woo sat beside him and his heart wrenched when he saw his best friend like this. Tears started glistening in his eyes and soon, two 18 years old man were crying together.
After a while, they stopped crying and just sat there, staring at the ground.
“Stay alive.”
“What?” Sun woo turned his head to the direction of the voice.
“Sigh…I said…Stay alive. Come back alive. Don’t die. At least not until I’ve repaid you.” Jung Hwan repeated himself and punched Sun Woo’s arm lightly.
“…I will. Thank you for being my best friend. ” He smiled and continued looking at the tear stained floor.
“No. Thank YOU. Without you, I would have been long dead already.” Jung Hwan suddenly stood up and bowed a 90 degrees bow. “Thank you so much for everything.”
Sun Woo’s eyes widened at the sight of his slightly older friend bowing to him. His eyes softened and he started laughing.
“Why are you laughing?! I’m being serious!” Jung Hwan stood up straight and scolded.
“I was just thinking about the past 12 years we’ve spent together, the pranks we did and the punishment we got together…” Jung Hwan turned red at the thought of it, because he was always the one that got both of them into trouble. “Our friendship is really precious isn’t it?” Sun woo continued and his sight drift to the window, to the moon hanging in the purple sky.
“Yes, it is.” Jung Hwan joined his best friend and gazed at the beautiful moon which marks their separation.
A few hours later, Sun Woo already packed his belongings and was ready to leave. He gave a letter to Jung Hwan before he left, instructing him to open it ONLY after he is pronounced dead. Jung Hwan bitterly accepted the letter. “We’ll read it together after you come back.” He said to Sun woo, making him smile before he left the camp.
“Goodbye, my best friend.” Jung Hwan muttered to himself as Sun woo slowly got out of sight.
1 year later
Jung Hwan became a terror to the new recruits and a good hyung to the older kids.
He likes to play pranks on the new recruits but once they are on good terms with him, he’ll treat them really well.
“Everybody run! The Monster is coming over!” One kid shouted when he saw Jung Hwan walking over.
“YAH! I HEARD YOU! COME OVER HERE!” He shouted and ran after them, easily catching 3-4 because of his trained body.
After forcing them to run 20 rounds around the campus, he let them off and went off searching for the leader that shouted that.
He walked to the back of the main office, hoping to find him there as “the most dangerous place is the safest place.” but there’s no one there. “Yah…that kid is getting faster and faster each day…”
When he was walking pass the office, a word caught his ears. “Sun Woo.”
He stopped in his track and sat below the window, hoping to be able to hear something about Sun woo.
“Is he coming back?” he thought to himself.
He strained his ears to hear what the trainers are talking about.
“Who’s that?” a deep voice asked. That must be Trainer Choi
“Cha Sun Woo! Remember?! Our best student last year!” This time, someone with a higher voice replied. Trainer Jung
“Ahh…Him! Why did you bring him up?”
“He…died in the war.”
HE. DIED. IN.THE.WAR.
“What?!” Trainer Choi asked, voicing out the question in Jung Hwan’s head too.
“The enemy killed him. I heard he couldn’t bear to kill the enemy even though he had the chance, giving the enemy an opportunity to stab him… He…wasn’t ready for war. He was too weak.”
“…How are we supposed to tell Jung Hwan this? Jung Hwan would lose all motivation to continue training and he’ll just be another useless chess piece.”
“Don’t tell him yet. He doesn’t need to know.”
Jung Hwan heard everything clearly. He crawled away, resisting the urge to vomit. When he has reached somewhere far enough, he started puking. He was disgusted.
He is disgusted by his trainers. Those inhumane words that came out of their mouth with no hesitation.
He’s too weak? Just because he can’t bear to kill someone?
He wasn’t ready for war? Isn’t it you who chose him, and sent him to war?
Useless chess piece? Are we not humans?
What really cut him deep was the fact that, his best friend is no longer in this world.
Their promise to one another was broken, because of death that separates them.
Jung hwan ran deep into the forest and started throwing a tantrum, kicking and punching the trees in frustration.
He shouted painfully. Not because of the wounds on his hands but because of the wound in his heart. The death of his best friend.
“There’s no point in staying here anymore.”
He ran back to his room and opened his drawer, preparing to take out his pocket knife and make an end to his miserable life.
He reached out for the knife but right beside it, is a letter. The letter Sun Woo wrote for him. The one they were supposed to read together. He moved his hands and reached out for the letter instead. He unfolds it slowly, not wanting to read it. With eyes closed, the letter is now unfolded. He slowly opened his eyes, taking each and every word in.
Choking on his tears as he read the letter, trying his best not to let the tears fall on the paper.
Jung Hwan ah,
Ahh…You’re reading this letter…It means I’m dead right? Haha. I wonder how I died. I really hope it’s a heroic death. Back to the point, don’t do anything silly okay?! I’ll not forgive you if I see you in heaven earlier than you should! You should really start training harder, if you want to get out of that place. Ah…I can’t believe I’m crying while writing this farewell letter. I really hope you won’t get to read this. I’m sorry. I’m sorry for breaking our agreement of meeting again. I’m sorry for breaking the promise of going back alive. I’m sorry I can’t be there to comfort you. I’m sorry I can’t be there to wipe your tears or cry with you. I’m really really sorry. Thank you for being such a good friend. Remember that prank you made on trainer Choi? The mud on his carpet joke? Haha! I remember we got scolded so badly and we had to wash the carpet and miss dinner. It was a tiring night but it was really funny. Haha…Aigoo… the memories are all coming back. Just now, when I was looking at the moon, I was actually praying to God that he’ll watch over you when I’m gone. Who’s going to clean up your mess now that I’m gone…I’m sure you’ll do well! Take care of yourself and stop crying. You’re really ugly when you cry okay? I love you, best friend. Goodbye.
-Cha Sun Woo.
