Magnestic Haung Tai-ji yao dao 皇太極腰刀 | LK Chen

Magnificent replica of the loyal saber that was belonged to Emperor Huang TaiJi - founder of China's last feudal dynasty.

The original sword is my favourite Chinese Dao and my favourite single-edged sword on the world (and actually I'm not even a fan of Ming/Qing Dao at all), I'm so happy LK made it's replica!

The Majestic Huang Taiji Yao Dao - Imperial Battle sword of the Qing Dynasty founder

Qing Dynasty founder Haung Taiji's battle sword represents the pinnacle of 17th century swords design and craftsmanship. This majestic yao dao (saber) belongs to Jurchen's Beile (Royal Prince) Huang Taiji who found the Qing Dynasty in 1636 AD. Due to its historic and artistic significance, Haung Tai-ji yao dao 皇太極腰刀 is designated national treasure first class and is the priced treasure of Shenyang Palace Museum. The sword is in excellent condition with the original scabbard and fittings and has a very sharp blade with an intimidating cinnabar blood groove, a battle weapon fit for the warrior prince, The original iron fittings were plated in silver and gold with exceptional Tibetan and Mongolian style open metal work. After three years of research and planning, we present a high fidelity recreation of this Majestic yao dao that set the standards and style for Imperial Qing Dynasty sabers. Here we meticulously recreate the gold and silver plated iron open metal work in brass. As I urged on to seek my vanished dream.

駟玉虬以乘鷖兮，溘埃風余上征。

Swift jade-green dragons, birds with plumage gold, I harnessed to the whirlwind, and behold,

朝發軔於蒼梧兮，夕余至乎縣圃； At daybreak from the land of plane-trees grey, I came to paradise ere close of day.

欲少留此靈瑣兮，日忽忽其將暮。 I wished within the sacred grove to rest, But now the sun was sinking in the west;

吾令羲和弭節兮，望崦嵫而勿迫。 The driver of the sun I bade to stay, Ere with the setting rays we haste away.

路曼曼其脩遠兮，吾將上下而求索。 The way was long, and wrapped in gloom did seem, As I urged on to seek my vanished dream.

飲余馬於咸池兮，總余轡乎扶桑。

The dragons quenched their thirst beside the lake Where bathed the sun, whilst I upon the brake

折若木以拂日兮，聊逍遙以相羊。 Fastened my reins; a golden bough I sought To brush the sun, and tarred there in sport.

前望舒使先驅兮，後飛廉使奔屬。 The pale moon's charioteer I then bade lead, The master of the winds swiftly succeed;

鸞皇為余先戒兮，雷師告余以未具。 Before, the royal blue bird cleared the way; The lord of thunder urged me to delay.

吾令鳳鳥飛騰兮，繼之以日夜。 I bade the phoenix scan the heaven wide; But vainly day and night its course it tried;

飄風屯其相離兮，帥雲霓而來御。 The gathering whirlwinds drove it from my sight, Rushing with lowering clouds to check my flight;

紛緫緫其離合兮，斑陸離其上下。 Sifting and merging in the firmament, Above, below, in various hues they went.

LK Chen – Han Sha Spear

The LK Chen Han Dynasty Sha Spear is an excellent and faithful recreation of this Han polearm which was one among the five mainstay weapons in the arsenal of the Han military. A sturdy, quick and relatively agile polearm, the Sha’s very long, sword-like blade can cut and slice at distance as well as puncture. The Sha was a polearm for a professional warrior and in the Han Dynasty they would have been associated with elite guards.

The blade of this example is crafted from 1060 and T9 high carbon steels which are skillfully folded together into a composite blade; vibrant patterning from this melding of steels is visible throughout the keenly sharp blade. A diamond cross section to the spear blade gives it excellent rigidity and it thins out toward the end to keep drag to minimum when slicing through a target in a cut. The guard is cast from brass and the long haft is of black lacquered ash wood. Faux leather cord is wrapped around the upper section of the pole and its robust cap is cast in matching brass. The ashwood haft has an oval cross section to aid in edge alignment for superior cutting.

Included is a wooden scabbard with brass fittings that is skillfully crafted to fit the blade.

“Magnificent Chu Jian from LK Chen is model after the design of 2,000+ year old Chu Jian specimens excavated during the 1950-1980 from tombs dating back to 315 - 221 BC, in regions within the ancient Kingdom of Chu.   Kingdom of Chu was famous throughout the land for their steel swords and Chu Jian’s fame was mentioned in multiple  historical records.  Contemporary with the mature bronze swords, Chu Jian represents an advancement in iron foundry technology and is an example of early transition from bronze to steel weapons.  

In the hand guard are two inscriptions in ancient bird-worm seal script of the word for gentleman warrior 士 “Shi””

I am highly impressed with this sword, its exquisite craftsmanship shines through clearly and handles very well. The attention to detail is amazing, down to the hand painted scabbard design. The quality is on par with my Albion sword. - REGIII, 32, RAM

Description

The Gallowglass were the most sought after warriors of the Irish clans who characteristically fought dismounted in long coats of mail and with large and powerful greatswords and long-hafted biting axes. They were depended upon to form a hard and unshakable core to a 13th-16th century Clan army and could be counted upon to tenaciously hold a line or lead a vicious charge. The Gallowglass hailed from far northwest clans of Irish who had intermarried extensively with Scottish and Norse settlers and were thus called the Gall Gaeil (the foreign Gaels, the “Gallowglass”). It is from their Norse and Scot backgrounds that the Gallowglass clans inherited their style of fighting and mastery of heavy armaments and some cunning Irish chiefs perceived their martial potential and gave them land to settle upon in return for promises of military service. Not only an asset to the Gaelic Chiefs army, these warriors could be relied upon by an Irish chieftain for personal loyalty and he would often make his bodyguard, retinue or warband from these “foreign Gaels” who could be depended upon to not be involved in the complex familial plots and internecine intrigues of the Clan and its succession. Many Gallowglass would also offer their services (often seasonally) as mercenaries who would serve Irish chiefs who could afford their worthy price.

The Balaur Arms Gallowglass Greatsword bears the large and wide cleaving blade typical of their type and it is forged from GB 60Si2MnA High Carbon Manganese Spring Steel (a steel with properties similar to 5160) which has been tempered to an 54-55 HRc hardness. The wide lenticular blade is optimized for brutally slicing into and through a target with both power and velocity for fierce blows, especially when in the hands of a strong or imposingly large warrior. Despite its substantial size, the sword is surprisingly quick and easy to wield thanks to its notable distal taper and long grip affording the user great leverage to deliver powerful sweeping blows. The wide, spatulate tipped blade is very similar to styles seen in the Scottish two-handed Claymore and like the Claymore, the blades for the Gallowglass greatswords were imported from abroad by wealthy clan chiefs and nobles in places like Solingen and then hilted in the local Irish style by local cutlers and used to outfit personal retinues or warbands.

The stainless steel hilt is in the characteristic and unique Gaelic style with spatulate ends of the crossguard forming a rudimentary S-curve crossguard. These spatulate ends are a stylized derivative of some Irish swords which were worked into the shape of cupped hands. The pommel is in the open ring style pommel unique to the Irish and unlike most examples on the market has a central outer groove. The blade is stoutly anchored onto the pommel with a separate pommel cap and the sword was finished with a grip of two halves of wood which were tightly bound in leather.

The sword has its own well-crafted scabbard of wood which is wrapped in tightly stitched brown leather and capped with a steel chape. An etched Celtic Cross on the mouth of the scabbard gives it a finishing flourish of Irish character.
