I thought Beksinski didn't title any of his paintings!
Me too, I vaguely remembered even reading that he refused to, and upon checking, all sources say that’s the case & that they’re all untitled.
All I can think is that maybe they’re arbitrary Designations that museums/collectors/etc. use to refer to specific pieces? Like a shorthand, instead of saying “the 1982 piece with dimensions 420 x 144 cm and the green foreground figure″ or whatever? That’s the only thing I can think of, they really are all untitled.
(For my blog, I’m probably going to start putting Untitled (”##”) instead of just copying over “##” for the pieces that are listed with such designations. I mean the only reason I’d personally care about the “##” is to use as a search term, if I were to try to find even higher-quality images of the piece sometime in the future)
