If both Matt and Fred don't show up to the conference, that's 2/3 of a whole continent being awol and Matthew is aware of the possibility of that causing people to gossip and start some surface level investigation that would turn into deeper investigation depending on what they would find. And Matthew doesn't want people to find out about this. I wonder if he absolutely needed to stay behind he might give some bs excuse to Josefina or Fruk to influence them to play along (while also trying to hide the situation from them. Matthew is about to borrow some Hollywood from Alfred for all the acting he needs to be doing here)

Idk how in contact Alfred and Matthew is with their southern neighbor Josefina, but she might be able to smell some strangeness going on. Especially if Alfred doesn't show up to meetings. ESPECIALLY if Matthew *also* doesn't show up to meetings

Alfred’s going through some episode. Matt understands that, at least. Both of his fathers have experienced it similarly, so he tries not to hold the manic and unsocialable behavior against him, especially knowing that he’s not gotten much of a break since ‘45.

REALLY? IS IT? DRILLING A HOLE IN THE SKULL AND MESSING WITH THE BRAIN IS MINIMALLY INVASIVE NOW IS IT?

Prefrontal lobotomies are the skull-drilling ones, alfreds was transorbital which means they tap something that looks like an ice pick into the corners of your eyes. They do have to tap through the bone but the procedure was seen as minimally invasive because it “didn’t have” to be done in a surgical setting and the patient could hypothetically go home the same day. The only evidence that it had been done would be two black eyes in the days/weeks following

So yeah we know that a brain slicing surgery isn’t minimally invasive but that’s how it would have been seen back then, esp in comparison to the old prefrontal way of doing it :)
