So I finished watching Justified and I’m this combination of satisfied and sad. It is such a brilliant show in so many ways. The characters are all amazing, the dialogue is incredible, and almost** everything was resolved in a satisfying way. The only** reason I’m sad is because it’s over. 10/10 would recommend.
**Okay, I’m not 100% satisfied and there is more than one reason that I’m sad. @wingsofnight asked/begged me to write a fix-it fic because she feels the same way. Unfortunately I would never in a million years feel comfortable writing a Justified fanfic because the dialogue and characterizations are just too damn good for me to even attempt it. (She wrote one though and it’s awesome but I’m not as good as she is!)
So instead here are my thoughts on one aspect of the ending of the show. I’ll put it after the cut in case anyone wants to watch and doesn’t want to be spoiled.
Throughout the series (and even before) there is this on-again/off-again relationship between Raylan and Winona. They fell in love and got married. And then Winona left him for Gary. And then she left Gary for Raylan. And then she got pregnant. And then she left Raylan again. And then she wanted to try and make it work. And then four years later... she’s married to a new guy named Richard???
I do get why their relationship is the way it is. They are both stubborn. Winona struggles with the dangerous nature of his job and worrying whether or not he’ll come home at the end of the day. Raylan often times choses the duties of his job over her. She goes back and forth between deciding she can’t be with him and then realizing she can’t be without him. Despite their many problems, they have never stopped loving each other. Every time Winona comes back to him, he’s there immediately taking her back. And regarding every other woman Raylan was with in the show, they were never that serious to him. He liked them, but he would have been willing to drop them in a second for Winona. In the case of Ava, he did. With Lindsey the bartender, when he found out she robbed him, he was disappointed because he thought she liked him. That seemed to be all he hoped for with anyone who wasn’t Winona. That they just liked him. Because he didn’t want any other woman to love him. Because he wasn’t going to love any other woman besides Winona.
So I don’t really see this marriage with Richard working out. I know we only saw him on screen for like a minute and I’m sure he’s a nice guy and a good stepfather to Willa. But how long before Winona realizes he’s not... enough. He’s not Raylan Givens.
Again, this show was pretty damn perfect. This one complaint I have is pretty minor compared to the many many many home runs that it hit. BUT if anyone out there wants to write or recommend a fix-it fic where Winona and Raylan realize they’re lobsters and make up their minds to be together once and for all, please send it my way. @wingsofnight and I would be extremely grateful!
AND SERIOUSLY WATCH THIS SHOW BECAUSE IT’S AMAZING!!!
