Happy Beltane - local tradition here to light huge bonfires and burn witch-figures on sricks to chase away the spirits of winter
It's that time of year in Mahone Bay again! Scarecrow Festival is this weekend. Basically the whole town becomes peppered with scarecrows and folks from all over come here and take pictures of them. I love it, but the crowds are obnoxious, especially when you live here all the time and just want to live your life. So, to beat the crowds this year, I decided to stay up all hours last night roaming around and taking pictures 😁
There's everything from clowns, celebrities, movie characters, musicians, artists, fishermen, witches, ghouls, animals, mythical creatures, and, yes, just plain scarecrows. It's actually a lot of fun, and I'm glad I could take it in again this year.
Home sweet home ♡

A small town has never elected a mayor with opposable thumbs. But is it ready for a new kind of four-legged leader? Eric Spitznagel reports
“Horses are just very majestic and mystical,” she told me. “They connect with everybody.”
There's kinda this tradition of sorts at my local art supply store. If your any kind of "doodler": you go in, go up the stairs, turn left and head down to the last isle. There there is a bunch of pens for testing, just slotted into little cubbies. All the shelves have been cleared away in place of hanging racks except the bottom one. And on the bottom shelf you doodle, however big or complicated you want. Once there was even a massive Chinese dragon carefully drawn along the whole length. More recently though it's just been tags and messages.
I wanted to draw Qrow as well, but I didn't have time, so I only managed Ozpin. I doubt he's still there, but if I go in during the week and he is, I'm gonna be pretty happy. I initially wasn't sure about the purples and pinks I blended in from all the tags, but I really like how it came out. Even it's not on the best background.

1. red, black, & gold 2. alleyway angels 3. 72hr day
----------
“So why are you doing this, again?”
“I don’t know. Boredom? Does there have to be a good reason?”
I’ve been interested in the Angel’s Pilgrimage, an offbeat tradition in this town, since I first moved here. I was in between work projects last weekend, so it seemed as good a time as any to try it. My roommate, Brenda, dropped me off at the alleyway behind St. Germain’s Court on Thursday afternoon. I walked in and set up in front of the Mural of the Three Angels: The Hand, The Truthteller, and The Other (a huge work of graffiti immortalized in the 1992 Mr. L.A. and Mr. Brownstone song “I Left My Soul With The Angels” (a trippy song about a long weekend spent in front of the mural, inspiration for the Pilgrimage)).
While I was there, I did what you’re supposed to do on the Pilgrimage, which is: “Do What You Do”. Primarily, I ate. I picked up a black bean, rice, and sausage platter from the co-op on the drive to the site. That was my first meal. I appropriated two slices of Brenda’s red velvet cake, which I portioned out over time. I also brought some cans of vegetarian chili, but soon realized that I’d forgotten to bring a can opener. Luckily, I also brought a couple of boxes of trail bars. I eventually ran out of those, but someone who was leaving the alleyway passed me an almost full box of Serenity Cookies. I rationed them carefully until it was time to go.
I went the traditional route, which is to say that I spent the 72 hours with the Angels that L.A. and Brownstone described (I timed it on my watch). Between meals I wrote in my journal, read “Infinite Jest” and contemplated my lowish place in the universe. I barely slept. I don’t sleep much anyway, but drinking a bunch of Gold’s Energy Drink probably didn’t help (I hate water). Overall, my experience ended up feeling like one long 72 hour day.
I also people watched. The crowd around me was an odd mix of characters who floated in and out of the space as time passed. One woman spent almost ten hours inking an elaborate geometric henna tattoo on her right thigh. One guy with a bookbag that was seemingly full of batteries spent almost his entire time in the alleyway watching cell phone videos (likely mostly pornographic - for the first three hours battery man was there, the air was filled with moans and slapping sounds, until a biker looking dude walked over to him and not so gently asked him to put on headphones). I saw a trio of guys wearing Arsenal jerseys get drunk, sober up, and get drunk again. There was also a homeless looking man who slept almost two days straight (I knew he was still alive because I occasionally saw him change position).
At the end of my Pilgrimage I staggered out of the alleyway and tossed my garbage in the dumpster (it had a helpful sticker on it that read “Toss Your Shit Here, Friends!!”). I was unwashed and pungent. Brenda met me on the corner and drove me home.
“Did you learn anything from your little adventure?”
“I learned that we are all confused souls, drifting our way through time and space.”
“Neato. I could have taught you that in just under half an hour.”
