LOCAL TREADERS: URBAN EXPLORATION
People want to be seen. That’s something I find apparent through all of this photographing and urban exploration. It’s a simple concept, and though it’s sometimes misrepresented by the busy and the agitated, I still think it’s true. For example, they say that negative attention is most always better than no attention. Ignoring a misbehaving child is a worse punishment than shouting or actively reprimanding. Being ignored is something that humans collectively cannot stand. It’s practically ingrained in our DNA. Taking someone’s photo, giving someone that moment of attention can really mean something. But similar to most things, there are barriers to that process. We hate to intrude, to impose ourselves upon strangers. And sometimes I have these moments of sonder where I think of everything everyone has to do on a daily basis, what all these strangers are collectively up to in their hectic scheduled lives. I’d like to leave them to it; I don’t want to be a bother. But sometimes the slightest attention is all it takes to open someone up, to really brighten their day. If my involvement – however brief it might be – can be uplifting in any way, that’s all I need to break down those aforementioned walls and make some good photos.

LOCAL TREADERS: FREQUENCIES & VIBES
Since late summer photographer and student Tyler Banash has been contributing his photo talents to Treading Art. Now he also shares with us his writing skills...
As far as my selection process goes, mostly it ends up as a choice of what feelings I can extract from the person I shoot. Their fashion and style is great, unique to them, all that is excellent. I look for that. But that’s not a bridge to approach across, I think. It’s more personal. I can’t go around like Bill Cunningham and operate on looks, just shooting and moving on. Proficient yes, but brevity leaves something to be desired. I go for the vibe, as drone as that sounds. It’s kind of all about frequencies. Sometimes you get on the right current with someone and it’s just go, go, go, do something with it! Look for context clues about that person, forge a connection, have a conversation deeper than how the sky looks that day. I try to make everyone I shoot a friend, and sometimes I only have a minute to do that before they lose interest. So the pressure is on for me to seem like an amiable and rad dude. Not to say I’m totally drab, or anything. But that kind of stuff is definitely what keeps me on the self-improvement route. I’m awfully glad to have that cycle of motivation in my life.

LOCAL TREADERS: FLEETING MOMENTS
Fall seems to definitely be having its moment. Finally the masses have caught on and it seems to be everyones favorite season. I love the crisp air combined with still sunny, summer-reminiscent days paired with bursts of fall color that flee all too soon. These local treaders have the right idea: relish this wonderful season and do so outdoors before the bitter cold takes us into hibernation.
