A Scout's Life: Scouting New York
Have you ever been out on the town and stumbled across a place you had seen in a movie? Maybe you have been somewhere and thought it would make the ideal movie location. Well, this is precisely what a Location Scout deals with each day on the job. Location Scouts have the responsibility of finding the perfect places to shoot around town. On Location Vacations recently spoke with one of New York City's prominent Location Scouts, Nick Carr. He discusses how he first landed the job through an acquaintance in the business, and his process for discovering shooting locations. Due to his experiences as a Location Scout, Carr seems to know the city inside and out, and cares about community issues as well (remember that petition that circulated to help save 35 Cooper Square?). Carr credits 5 Beekman Street in the Financial District as being his favorite discovery in the city. There is a limited amount of information floating around about the role of the Location Scout within a production, and Carr provides some solid insights into life in the film industry. He also shares his experiences as a Location Scout on his personal blog, Scouting New York, which has quickly become one of my favorite sites regarding filmmaking in the city.
