Hey Tandem!! I know that you said that you'll be safe, but, oh, please try to stay as safe as possible and to take precautions!!! If you're driving there, bring towels and vacuums just in case your car floods, and try to take as many pictures w/ dates and proof of ownership attached of all your property so that insurance can't skimp you if your house does indeed (god forbid) go under. Sorry if I sound chiding, but I want you to stay physically, financially, etc safe during this dangerous time!!!
Hey!!! I hope you don’t mind me posting this because I’m sure other people may also be worried.
I will be leaving tomorrow and the drive is only ~3 hours (going the speed limit and without traffic so it could be longer or even shorter tomorrow) and the Hurricane is only going to just hit SOUTH Florida on, I believe, Sunday morning, so I should well be in the safety of my sister’s home by then.
I don’t actually own this house, I just rent my room, so I’m not entirely sure how exactly that will play out but I will try and take some pictures. Not sure how to get the date with it though.
I’ve put all my valuables that I won’t be bringing with in a safe (I will be taking the key with me), and everything else in my room, not in dressers or the nightstand and of importance, in my closet on its shelves. I’m going to unplug all electrical devices, save for the fridge, and keep them in high enough places.
I’m making ice packs and putting them in the freezer in case the power goes out (and it probably will) in my absence. I’m going to put towels at the back door and at my closet door. There’s not many trees at the front of the house (where my room is) so we should be good there, but there is a forest behind the house so I am not sure how that may turn out.
My roommate is also going to be leaving to her hometown, which is more west in florida (about an hour and a half drive away) and should be okay.
I am bringing water and snacks on my drive, taking all the “bigger” valuables with me (the wii and laptop), there are already towels in my car as well as a GPS... uhhh...
I’m really hoping we don’t get hit very hard up here, as we’re in northwest Florida. Hopefully, the hurricane slows down a bit as it hits the southern land and loses power, and we only receive the worst of its outskirts when it’s really strong.
We had a hurricane last semester that was a category three, and that went alright. No damage to the house, but the power went out for about two-three days. Luckily, we share our power with a publix nearby so it comes on faster than other places. I also have our utility app to check if the area/our house loses power, and for how long that way I can know if we need to throw everything in the freezer out (freezers usually stay cold enough for 48 hours as long as they are unopened).
Don’t have time to get sandbags, and I don’t have a shovel to get them lol. I recently got a refund with financial aid so I can also work with more money than I expected so that is good as well.
I’m more concerned for my family in my hometown who live more southern than me.
