Here's Another Picture That Finally Made it to Life!
Log bed masterpost:
Okay! Current project is making a log bed for myself...as my current bed is really a kid's bed, and feels....dangerously collapse-y. This is still VERY much in the planning stage & probably will be for some time, plus I'm using hand tools, so yeahhhh. Gonna take a while.
I'm sorry in advance for the complete lack of technical terms & bad Tumblr drawn diagrams™
Main posts:
-there's a Christmas tree dump at the top of my road, so I'm thinking of sourcing at least the main posts from that after Christmas. Douglas fir is a pretty nice wood to work with, it's a softwood so pretty easy to carve, but it's also used for its durability and strength in weight bearing etc, which is perfect. Possibly gonna be annoying getting off the resin/sap bubbles tho.
- I'm thinking of doing a design a bit like this ↓
See how the posts kinda point? Like that. Although I doubt I'll be doing two posts, this bed is MASSIVE and I'm going for a double bed. Possibly going to do two posts at the top like this for the aesthetics, although I have to watch how far they go out because of the space limit.
Frame:
-hopefully going to find some relatively cheap wood slabs from a local sawmill - haven't got round to researching that but I will soon. Gonna need 4 slabs (blue) for that. Then I'm probably just gonna use cheap square posts (purple) attached to those on the inside, with triangle supports (red) underneath & one through the middle. Those are to place the slats on btw. The yellow is where imma screw it all together, and the green is the posts. I'm sorry for how terribly messy this plan is but I hope you get the gist. Also I haven't figured out how imma connect the slabs & posts yet, probably either through the good old "interlocking pieces" method, or some kind of heavy duty bolting, since these will be holding up all of the weight. Might have to use 2 posts so I can nail/screw/bolt/whatever one board to each post...hmmm.
Headboard:
Honestly idk what I'm going to do for the headboard yet. Still figuring it out but currently the favourite ideas are:
- square wood frame with upholstered cloth padding in the middle - probably backed with plywood because im not rich lol.
- squarish/curved at top headboard with some kind of old style carving - think Victorian/early 1920s carving. Like on those Mexican dressers/cabinets? Yeah.
Slats:
- gonna do some research into this & basically just see at the time whether it's cheaper to just buy some bed slats or if wood prices are down, it's cheaper to buy the wood & cut and screw it myself. Considering wood prices rn, it's probably cheaper to buy slats lol.
Alright that's it for now - gotta do some research at some point and then get back to this with actual measurements & rough sizes. See you then!
