❛ If all the world hated you, and believed you wicked, while your own conscience approved you, and absolved you from guilt, you would not be without friends. ❜

In warfare, it’s not often a man can owe someone his life and survive long enough to hope he can repay the debt. He’d felt almost certain his time was up before Claire found him, just another among the thousands of broken soldiers gracelessly bleeding out on an eerily silent French battlefield. No doubt he would have been lost among the inevitable mountain of nameless corpses if not for her closing his wounds and lifting his spirits, keeping him hanging on long enough for his body to heal. He’s always felt like meeting her was fate -- perhaps that same fate will allow them to cross paths again, if only he has the correct address.
He’s almost nervous approaching the front door, flowers in one hand and a bottle of wine in the other; the least he can offer. He’s not sure she’ll recognise him without dried blood and the remnants of boot polish covering his face -- 1945 feels a lifetime ago, and surely grief and pain have aged him beyond the five years since they met. His hand reaches to smoothen down his hair; a nervous habit that probably does more harm than good with the flowers in the way, and he’s still battling the damn things when the door opens on his surely-startled expression.

“You mustn’t tell ANYONE!” Neeltje immediately hissed. “If you do — I AM RUINED!”
It was true — Neeltje was bloody. Her hands were covered, and she had spent a few moments trailing away from the dead, British man, who had attacked her. On top of that, the bottom of her skirt looked charred. Something told her that Claire would notice that next. “You cannot — I was attacked. I defended myself. Now I must wash —“ Her voice shook as she spoke. “And you cannot tell a SOUL! Do you understand me?!”
“ Are you upset with me? ”
it’s not so much him she is upset with than it is for allowing herself to be talked into chasing this ghost. exactly like mrs. graham had warned her about, and ironically, here she finds herself letting the ghost dictate her choices and walk out the path for her. the ghost being herpresumed-dead-now-alive husband. claire tries to smile at roger, but fails and it resembles a stiff smile with a sad curve instead. “ i shut the door on my past a long time ago … ” her shoulders heave in a long sigh and she recollects herself. “ no, roger, you have been nothing short of helpful, but maybe this is all too much. ”
"I know. I’m sorry. I should have called. I'll just check myself into the nearest hotel."
He said, already getting up from his seat. He felt responsible for this, after all, he had been the one who couldn't let go of the matter. He had to find out what happened. Not to mention the fact that there was something going on between her and Brianna. He felt like he was only adding fuel to the flames here.
