“Are Loitering About Penitentiary Reserve,” Kingston Whig-Standard. July 23, 1932. Page 9. ---- Complaints have been made to the provincial police about men loafing around the grounds at the Collins Bay penitentiary at night, and it was pointed out to The Whig-Standard to-day, that men found loitering on these grounds will be subject to arrest.

This poem by Gwendolyn Brooks reminded me of the ongoing discussion we have been having on being aware of the dangers of being black in America. This poem portrays Emmett Till as a “Dark Villain” who has pursued the white woman who now needs to be rescued by the fine prince. The wording throughout this poem shows how negatively blacks have been viewed in regards to being seen as not human, beasts that prey on the pure and innocent white women. The conversation within this poem calls into question not only a young black child’s position in society, as well as the innocence of the white woman.
