Finally! After about a month of working on this over the weekends, I’m finally done with my Loki redesign. I’m really proud of how this came out. I tried to keep her calculating, seductress look without it being, you know, “BOOBS.” She can actually wear this dress without superglue. (Superglue is the only explanation I will accept for how she doesn’t fall out of her original outfit.) My thought process on the redesign beneath the Read More for anyone interested in my design choices.
So I read on the Fire Emblem Wiki that Loki’s design is meant to resemble a dazzling, bewitching flower, so I wanted to keep that in mind as I worked on her outfit. Originally, I wanted to make her skirt more of a petal skirt, but I couldn’t ever get that fabric to look right, so I had to scratch that idea. Maybe once I’ve gotten more comfortable drawing with my tablet, I’ll go back and do some edits on this. Overall, I wanted to make her look beautiful and seductive, but also calculating and cunning. She is a strategist after all.
The biggest change was that I reworked the overall shape of the bodice of her dress. I wanted to give her a bit more support than her original outfit, but still keeping her as a femme fatale. She’s showing cleavage here, but her boobs are not seconds from falling out of her corset. (Personally, I think just a hint of cleavage is sexier than just flashing everything.) I also extended the bodice down to her hips because I thought it emphasized her figure more and resembled the petals of a flower about to unfurl.
Her original skirt kind of looked like it was barely hanging on (and not in a sexy way, but in a “this skirt is badly sewn” way), so I altered the shape of it slightly. I also got rid of the wear clasp/broach holding the skirt together because it just made the shape of the dress look awkward to me, and it looked like it could make movement awkward. Besides, she should get to flaunt her legs (well, leg). I decided to go with stockings because I thought that would be sexier than just showing her bare legs. Also, I really don’t get the one-legged tights. Azura has that in her design too. It just doesn’t make sense to me because it’s not like the tights are for modest or warmth because the tights are always on the leg hidden by the skirt, not the leg on view. I guess the one-legged tights add some asymmetry to the design for visual interest, but her skirt is already doing that. I just personally don’t like it.
I kept her original color scheme intact for the most part. Interestingly enough, her color scheme is very similar to the clematis flower, which symbolizes trickery, artifice, and ingenuity. Very fitting for her character. I decided to add a little bit of red to the inside of her sleeves and skirt to hint at her danger hidden behind her beauty. She is not a character to be messed with. The red also ties her to Múspell more I suppose, but I'm pretty sure that her color scheme is intentionally different from the other Book 2 antagonists. I don’t think she’s gonna be loyal to Múspell or Surtr in the long run. We’ll have to see how Book 2 plays out.
I'm ok with most of the redesign but the missing tooth? Now he doesn't look like a good punk ( like what storm did) but one of those basically neo-nazi fuckboys who used to catcall me. Cmon Loki you can do so much better than this
Agreed on the “not good punk”, and I think the low-eyebrows-into-the-eyes thing that adds to that, too. It’s like King Loki jumped into his younger body and went on the road as the front man for a punk metal band. Which, I’m sure, would be hilarious, but still. While I trust that Ewing and Garbett would never take Loki in the fuckboy direction (they are super progressive/awesome and that would be sooo against his entire #1-#13 character arc) the visual makes Loki look menacing, dark, and a little bit like a try-hard. Like Dante from DMC5, whom I thought was okay but could never think of him as the real Dante. I DO feel better about new Loki after seeing some notes with another redesign sketch……but I am going to miss nice Loki. The Loki who cooks for his friend. Who gets people into trouble but then does his best to get them out of it, even if they don’t like him, because he feels guilty. The Loki who shifted so easily between forms yet (for the most part) remained the same inside. This new Loki probably isn’t nice, and may be fantastic in other ways. I’m certain we’re about to see Loki being a badass on an entirely new level. But I’m very, very attached to Loki who wore cool socks and played video games and worried over making first impressions. He was so… relatable. I’m not sure what to make of new Loki yet, but I KNOW I’ll miss the old one. I can’t help being attached when they did such an amazing job with him. Hopefully the change isn’t as drastic as we expect, or if it is, it’s beginning a new character growth/relationship growth period. I feel like the redesign may be transitional, what with the big “end of all things” Marvel event in the near future. I’m sure some surprises are in store. It was just visually jarring, and I sincerely hope his personality keeps some of those very endearing traits we grew to love.
