I would bet money on the Joe = therapist trope coming from people who have only seen him through other people or don't pay attention. That man is absolutely batshit insane in a very particular way, and you would have no clue if you weren't paying attention. He has his own special brand of chaos that cannot be accurately described with words, other than you can never predict it. There is consistency, just nobody, not even Joe, knows what it is

I bet a lot of people‘s first time seeing Joe was through Grian’s season six, specifically the lava prank. From Grian’s POV, that episode was… interesting. He, who is typically seen as one of the most chaotic Hermits, found someone who could rival him in chaos with completely different vibes. The vibes are key with Joe; you can’t understand them unless you watch him, and even then it’s difficult.

I‘ve always thought of understanding Joe’s character as a sort of curve: you start at the bottom, with no knowledge of his character. As you watch more content, you gain a better understanding. But at some point, you watch so much and feel like you have to put everything together and you feel like you can’t write him anymore, even if you most certainly can.

My point here is that if you’re going to write Joe into your stories, especially as a main character, please do your research. Just a couple videos and a few collabs will go a long way. His vibes aren’t easily understood by anyone, even himself, but if I could sum it up in one phrase, it’s the Joe Hills Difference.
