Needless to say, Arkham Horror can be a long game, easily lasting several hours. We used mixed drinks for this game, two shots of 60-80 proof liquor in a pint glass, mixed with whatever else. Being broke college students this usually results in some variety of UV vodka being mixed with soda. We have a full list of recommended drinks, both for the broke and non-broke, after the rules and our review.
Every rule calls for the drinking of 1 drink by the person triggering the rule unless otherwise noted.
Every time you receive a unique item (excluding when starting equipment is handed out)
Every time you receive an ally (again, excluding when starting equipment is handed out)
Every time you draw a portal event card and it matches the color(s) you need on the first try.
Every time you seal a portal.
Take 1 drink for ever 2 points of monster trophy you collect.
Every time the terror track goes up
Every time a portal spawns in your location
Every time you become Lost in Time and Space
Every time your health OR sanity drops to zero
Every time the Terror Track moves up
When drawing event cards, drink every time your location is "the other" on the event card.
Special rule: At the beginning of every mythos, before drawing a mythos card, everyone picks a shape. If the mythos card indicates that the shape you chose moves, give out one drink to any player (including yourself and including other players that may give out drinks)
Special rule: The Ancient One may be re-drawn if all players unanimously decide to scrap it AND every player takes a shot. This can be done as long as there are still more gods to draw from, but once the first person has begun the first phase of the game this offer ends.
This game, once it gets going, provides a pretty continuous buzz throughout the game. It's not enough to impair your ability to play the game which is good because the game is long enough without people forgetting how to play it or making exceptionally poor choices about what to do. For those who don't like this game, the drinking rules probably wont help your enjoyment that much. However, for those who do like this game the added drinking rules can provide a bit more complexity and add to the fun as you and your friends slowly lose just a small bit of the sanity and health your adventurers will.
Drink Recommendations. Please note the amount of liquor used when selecting your drinks as most of these cocktails contain a lot more alcohol by volume than the drinks we were using.
The Gin Rickley, a cocktail dating back to the prohibition era - In a tall glass with ice squeeze half a lime, dropping the rind in after it's been squeezed. Add 1.5-2 ounces of gin, fill with club soda and stir gently.
The Ward 8, straight out of Boston and also from the prohibition era - combine 1.5oz bourbon OR rye, 2 teaspoons of lemon juice, one teaspoon of grenadine and one teaspoon of orange juice into a shaker half-full of ice. Shake well, strain into a cocktail glass.
Mint Julep, a classic cocktail - Muddle 4 to 6 mint leaves, one teaspoon of powdered sugar and two teaspoons of water in a glass. Add ice and 1.5 ounces of bourbon, stir well.
Martini - In a shaker with ice mix 1.5oz of gin and 1.5oz dry vermouth. Stir or shake at your preference, pour into cocktail glass and garnish with olives, cocktail onions or a twist of lemon. For a vodka martini substitute gin for vodka.
Dark & Stormy - 1.5-2 ounces dark rum, 3 ounces ginger beer (alcoholic or non. Ginger ale can be substituted but it wont be as good), half an ounce of lemon juice. Stir with ice.
Green Tear - 1 part absinthe, 1 part tonic water, 2 parts cranberry juice, dash of lemon juice, stir well.
