It's a little complicated.
The story is about a young prostitute named Evdokia who meets and falls in love with a military officer. They decide to marry after one day's romance a la Romeo and Juliet but their environment gives them a hard time because of her job.
I loved many things about the film, but I felt that the ending was really random and didn't tie well with the film's main theme. If it wasn't for the ending, I think I would have loved the film. Maybe a rewatch will convince me otherwise. On a side note, the sound was horrible.
However, many consider it the greatest greek film of all time, and even without this detail, I'd probably still recommend it. I don't know if you'll be able to find it though. I watched it on tv a couple of months ago, and I think people were able here to get in on dvd via a newspaper giveaway. It exists full on youtube, but i'm not sure if it also features english subtitles.
