For years, I only nurtured my short term self. I lost all my "friends" because I woke up one day and realized the future is now and people who are not on that wave are a waste of time. I allowed much of the best parts of me decay in the pursuit of "people pleasing" or "trying to be cool". I realised that whatever I wanted to do for my long term self, whoever I wanted to be in the future, didn't have to wait until I was old.
