Pressure from the Burn, Lonnie Holley, 1995, Minneapolis Institute of Art: Paintings

Lonnie B. Holley created Pressure from the Burn as a reminder to persist in the face of hatred and violence against African-American people and culture. The fire hose and wood used to fashion this cross came from a railroad bed near Sloss Furnace, in Birmingham, Alabama. In 1993, Holley had made a monumental work called The Goal of Creativity on the site that the city destroyed a year later without warning Holley. When he made this cross, he said, "Having to put out a fire inside yourself, no matter how bad the blaze you been in, you got to go on carrying your burden." Size: 76 × 41 × 10 in. Join us on a road trip through the Archives of American Art.

Our first stop is in Alabama, where the stars fell on sculptor Lonnie Holley (b. 1950). Holley worked several odd jobs in Birmingham before he found his calling as an artist. Soon after his 29th birthday, he began making artwork from scavenged sandstone and metal. The Birmingham Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum were among the first institutions to acquire his visionary sculptures in the early 1980s. Art dealer Jimmy Hedges snapped these playful photographs of Holley reeling in a sandstone fish near the artist’s home in Harpersville.

These photographs are currently on view in our exhibition, Off the Beaten Track: A Road Trip through the Archives of American Art, on view through June 3 in our Lawrence A. Fleischman Gallery in Washington, D.C.

Legendary for his environmental assemblage that spread over two acres of his property in Birmingham, Alabama–now destroyed–Holley scavenges and repurposes found objects in the service of a personal philosophy of renewal and rejuvenation. This is the first monograph on Holley’s work in more than a decade. Illustrated with reproductions of more than 70 of Holley’s sculptures, it provides a comprehensive overview of Holley’s art, life and philosophy, with essays by Mark Sloan, Leslie Umberger, Bernard L.
