ConFlea!Avatar AU for looxlikealix: As the latest in the Avatar cycle Constance has had to train her whole life; under the guidance of her bending teachers: Anne a water bender, Porthos an earthbender, Ninon a firebender, and Samara an airbender she is deemed ready to be the Avatar to the world.

Her first stop is Paris, the largest city that is a mix of benders and nonbenders, where she meets the clever thief Flea who always has a hand full of gadgets (whether they were created by her or stolen Constance has yet to figure out); unfortunately the city is also under threat by the bloodbender “Equalist” Rochefort, Cardinal Richelieu who wants the spirit portals opened for his own purposes, and Marie de Medici who is gathering an army to take Paris out.

Together with her bending masters, Flea, and a handful of other citizens willing to help, Constance is going to save the world.

Normally despite her initial struggle with learning how to airbend Constance was perfectly fine communing with the spiritual world and her past selves; today though it was giving her trouble now that the heat of battle had ended.

She was too focused on her physical surroundings and not on the energy within her, if Samara were there she’d tell Constance that she needed a break, not to try to force but Constance just needed to know that she could access it outside of a fight on a regular basis.

The clicking of boots against the floor alerted her to Flea, the other woman purposely allowing herself to be heard, and she heard a sigh before Flea knelt to the ground, arranging herself so her back was pressed against Constance’s.

“Trouble in paradise Connie?”

Constance’s lips pressed together in annoyance at the nickname, “Being interrupted doesn’t help.”

“You could take a break, celebrate with the rest of us. You did manage to spiritbend just fine earlier today.”

And nearly lost you in the process, Constance thought, biting the inside of her cheek at the memory of Flea lying on the floor helpless as Rochefort’s bloodbending held her down.

“Hey,” Flea had shifted, her lips close to Constance’s ear, “Enough of that, I told you I’m fine. I can even prove it.”

What Flea did next Constance hadn’t expected at all, a sudden wetness on her cheek that had her eyes flying open, jerking back, and staring at the blonde woman in surprise.

Her mouth opened and –

It is never too much to take a break now and then, a voice that sounded much like Avatar Agnes who came before her rang in her head.

Constance blinked in surprise, Flea tilted her head and grinned.

“Your eyes went all out there like they do when you’re talking to spirits.” Flea stated, she sounded smug.

“Did you just lick me?” Constance finally managed to splutter out.

“I did, and it helped.” Flea stood up, brushing off her clothes and offering a hand to Constance, “Proved that I’m fine and gave you that shock you needed to get to see spirits. You always do better at it when you’re surprised by something.”

It took her a minute to think back on things but she had to admit Flea was right, she did commune better with her past selves when she was surprised or under pressure. There must have been something to that that she could tap…

“Come on.” Flea waved her hand in front of Constance’s face. “Now that you’ve figured it I say we go join the celebrations”

She shook her head in bemusement but took Flea’s hand nonetheless, when the blonde woman didn’t let go right away Constance looked at her with a quiet question.

“I’ll always be here for you Connie.” Flea said, pausing and Constance felt a surge of gratitude for the other woman right before, “To give you that surprise you need in your life.”

“Thank you,” She said dryly. “Just what I needed.”

If she chose not to let go of Flea’s hand the whole walk back to the others the blonde said nothing, only holding back just as tightly in quiet comraderie.
