The under-fire Environment Agency boss has accused ministers of "getting in the way" of the national response to the flooding crisis by turning it into a political row. Lord Smith said there was "no place for playing politics in the serious business of flood protection" and defended the work of the EA in the face of mounting criticism. The chairman of the Environment Agency (EA) will visit Somerset flood victims today, more than a month after severe storms first hit the area. Lord Smith is due to arrive on the Somerset Levels after another night of heavy rain overwhelmed local flood defences, causing water levels to rise again. Residents have been evacuated from many parts of the Levels, including Moorland, North Moor, Fordgate and Salt Moor.
