Lord Cobham’s Pillar, Stowe.
Lord Cobham’s Pillar is an imposing sight, the pillar contains a spiral staircase to the belvedere at the top, though this is not open to the public. It would be easy to assume that this was built as a memorial to Lord Cobham, but that is not the case. The pillar’s construction was completed in 1749, the year of Lord Cobham’s death, it was comissioned by Lord Cobham’s wife as a place to view the entirety of the gardens. Lord Cobham has not always stood so proudly on the belvedere either, in 1957 lightening hit Lord Cobham’s statue and he was displaced. During restoration works in 2000-2001 Lord Cobham was returned to the top of the belvedere where he stands taking in the sights of his impressive gardens -RoxyB.
Pretty magnificent, who could afford a massive thing like that in their back garden? -TommyC.
