Being human is an art. Letting myself be seen by others without crawling out of my skin requires constant finessing. I have to keep an open heart — but it can’t be tooopen because there’s still plenty of desperate energy in this world. I have to have thick skin, but it can’t be armor that keeps everybody out, because then what’s the whole point of anything?

"I produce my craft and share so earnestly largely due to the absence of my father. No judgment or rejection from my audience will ever touch the heartbreak of that deficiency — which is, in a sense, liberating. I am grateful for the current of suffering that courses through me, because of his conscious decision to abandon me as his daughter. It confounds and plagues me; there is no other way to hold it. But this ache is also what frees me. His unwillingness to extend love is painful enough that it forces perspective. 

As a result, my pain tolerance is pretty high. I feel mostly unburdened by other, more micro rejections that I naturally encounter being human, especially an expressive one. What’s leftover to touch or to scathe? Big deal."
