Welcome to Lore of Command, a series where I look at the lore and flavor of Legendary Creatures in Magic: The Gathering. Today I’m taking a quick break from Commander (2017 Edition) to feature four supplemental legends from Planechase 2012.
Planechase 2012 had the unique privilege of adding more legends to the game. While Commander definitely wasn’t the focus, the success of the previous year’s Commander product likely influenced the inclusion of new potential commanders. Commander would resume the following year and hog the slot from then on (it turns out people like new cards). Unfortunately, there’s almost no lore on any of these legends, and we can only make suppositions about them.

This week’s Lore of Command kicks off Commander (2017 Edition)’s biggest tribe, Dragons. Lore of Command helps players hone in on what lore is associated with their Commanders, and hopefully help people make more flavorful deck choices (or just like them more as characters). The Dragon deck’s Commanders are all dragons with a history.

O-Kagachi leveled Konda’s kingdom, but by the time he found That Which Was Taken, it had taken form and named itself Kyodai. Together with Konda’s daughter Michiko, they defeated O-Kagachi and took its place as the guardians of the barrier between worlds.

He would be revived by the crew of the Weatherlight millennia later, and impart to them his powerstones.

Her bond would lead her and her kittens to defend his family home when he turned against the Madaran Empire (and Nicol Bolas). I have another post coming out next week commenting on all the instances of facial markings we’ve seen in Magic (mostly the viking/barbarian types), but I wanted to highlight these three pieces of art because we just got a major clue that Saskia and Licia are connected... and that Inalla might be as well. Special thanks to @baracksadbama, who tipped me off Friday and provided me with images of the blurbs.
Let’s take a look back at Saskia the Unyielding’s blurb, from It’s Time To Talk Commander (2016 Edition):
Saskia was the sole survivor of a massacre conducted against her village by an invading army from across the sea. The warrior tradition of her people calls for the survivors of a battle to erect a monument of stones for the fallen—a task Saskia toiled at in solitude for nearly ten years. As news of her labor spread among her kindred, thousands of warriors journeyed to see Saskia place the final stone upon this symbol of defiance. The monument complete, her mind turned from mourning to vengeance. With axe in hand and a host at her back, Saskia brought war to the doorsteps of her enemies.
Emphasis mine. Well, that seemed to be that for the last year. We wondered where Saskia was from, being the only face-card of the Commander (2016 Edition) decks to be from an unknown plane. Cue this year, when we learned Licia’s blurb for the website had actually been cut short. The full Licia, Sanguine Tribune’s blurb, from her product insert:
Licia is an army general renowned for her ruthlessness in battle. She wields dual swords stained with the blood of countless victims, including the enchanted blood of an angel, whose feathers Licia wears in her helmet as a symbol of her supremacy. As ravenous for conquest as she is for blood, she led an invading force across the sea, rampaging from village to village on a merciless massacre, leaving nothing but death in her wake.
(Emphases Mine Again) Um... what? That’s way to similar a story for them not to be related. So it looks like rather than two homeless legends, we actually have two inhabitants of a Roman vs Viking plane!
But that may not be all.
The facial markings on Saskia are obvious. The ones on Licia are not as obvious, but check out the zoomed-in panes on the left.
You know who else has these markins, and what appears to be a streak of dyed hair to boot (just like Saskia)? Inalla, who happens to be 2017′s homeless Commander.
Inalla, Archmage Ritualist by Yongjae Choi
Take a look at those outfits. I can’t help but feel Inalla matches the same general vibe as Saskia and Licia, with her colorful cap but simple and realistic leather armor. Perhaps we’re looking at a world where facial markings like this are common place? I can’t stress enough, facial markings in Magic are highly unusual. To date, we’ve only ever seen it on the Balduvian Barbarians on Dominaria, and the Ghitu Tribe from Shiv on Dominaria.
Here is Inalla’s blurb:
Inalla is a masterful wizard whose quest for power led her to probe the depths of the darkest sorcery. She concealed her arcane practice from the elders of her conclave, impressing them with her talent and working her way up to the position of archmage, an ascent aided by the forcible removal of any who stood in her way. As archmage, Inalla devised an inner council, ostensibly to protect the conclave from external threats, but in truth to act as a dark wizards’ circle where she could teach forbidden magic. Her machinations hint at her greater plan to augment her power and influence.
Nothing links her directly, but I I suspected Inalla and Saskia were from a Viking World long before this evidence of Licia and Saskia were plane-buddies.
This week’s Lore of Command covers Commander (2017 Edition)’s purriest deck, Cats! Lore of Command helps players hone in on what lore is associated with their Commanders, and hopefully help people make more flavorful deck choices (or just like them more as characters). Years later, the young wizard Jodah came to the Conclave (led by the Rag Man, a creature sent by Ith for aid), Mairsil conspired to sacrifice Jodah to Phyrexia, hoping to open a portal to ‘the dark lands’ and be granted power (people on Dominaria generally thought of Phyrexia as hell, not understanding it’s true nature). Jodah free’s Ith, and the furious wizard burns Mairsil to cinders... but not before Mairsil transferred his essence to his ruby red ring.
The Kjeldoran deserter Lim-Dûl would find Mairsil’s ring in the ruins of the Conclave of Mages, Mairsil having wormed his way into the soldiers mind to the point where the two were indistinguishable. Upon Lim-Dûl’s defeat, Jaya Ballard recovered the ruby ring, only for Mairsil to slowly worm his way into her mind as well. Jodah and Jaya defeated Mairsil once and for all when Jaya’s latent spark ignited.

Welcome to Lore of Command, a series where I look at the lore and flavor of Legendary Creatures in Magic: The Gathering.
Today I’m continuing my look back at supplemental legends, mainly from products like Commander, and examining what, if any, lore they’ve added added to their stories. In most cases, the answer will be they have not, but it’s worth noting who has had their story expanded on.
The fourth Commander product is the aptly titled Commander 2015. This release got its own Story Site. While 2014 featured a lot of old characters, or the past of old characters, 2015 switched it up by reintroducing us to new versions of old characters. Let’s start with one of the most depressing.
Daxos the Returned
Daxos the Returned by Adam Paquette
Daxos of Meletis was killed by a Planeswalker he loved, but freed from the Underworld in a cruel bargain with the god of the dead. Now he is one of the Returned, traveling across Theros in an endless search for his beloved Elspeth Tirel—but she has taken his place in the realm of the dead.
Home Plane: Theros (Meletis)
Featured In: Theros: Godsend Part I, Journey Into Nyx: Godsend Part II, Flavor Text
Updates: Unfortunately, just like Elspeth has been loitering in the Underworld for three years, Daxos has been wandering the surface, not quite sure of what he’s lost.
Karlov of the Ghost Council
Karlov of the Ghost Council by Volkan Baga
Karlov is a member of the Obzedat, the ghostly oligarchy that rules the Orzhov Syndicate on Ravnica. Death has not robbed him of his wealth, his power, or his greed, and he clings fiercely to every scrap of influence his position on the council affords him.
Home Plane: Ravnica (Orzhov Guild)
Featured In: Guildpact, Family Values
Updates: Teysa’s story hasn’t progressed since Family Values, and we haven’t heard of her villainous ghost-uncle, either.
Mizzix of the Izmagnus
Mizzix of the Izmagnus by Cliff Childs
The alchemists and artificers of Ravnica's Izzet League are aided by dozens of attendants, who endure dangerous conditions while their masters remain at a safe distance. Mizzix began as one such attendant, but demonstrated a keen intellect that earned a place at her own magical forge.

Featured In: Project Lightning Bug, Mizzix’s Mastery, Flavor Text
Updates: We haven’t seen Mizzix again since she rivaled Ral Zarek for control of Project Lightning Bug.
Arjun, the Shifting Flame

Home Plane: Unknown

Ezuri, Claw of Progress
Ezuri, Claw of Progress by James Ryman
As Mirrodin was transformed into New Phyrexia, the Phyrexian forces captured the elf, Ezuri. Following an excruciating process of transformation—what he would now call "perfection"—Ezuri became an agent of New Phyrexia's will.
Home Plane: New Phyrexia (formerly Mirrodin)
Featured In: The Quest for Karn, Ezuri’s Predation, Associated Cards, Flavor Text
Updates: This was actually the latest update for this pre-existing character, so no. This was pretty inevitable, as Ezuri was always more interested in his own self-aggrandizement over the good of Mirrodin.
Kaseto, Orochi Archmage
Long ago, on the plane of Kamigawa, Seshiro led the orochi colonies—the home of his four-armed serpent race. The archmage Kaseto claims descent from this ancient master, and is the keeper of the received wisdom of his revered ancestor.
Home Plane: Kamigawa
Featured In: Nothing
Updates: Kaseto claims to be a descendant of Seshiro, but with no story about Kaseto, they’re just another member of the Seshiro brood.
Meren of Clan Nel Toth by Mark Winters
Meren of Clan Nel Toth
Meren seeks vengeance on her clan—and all of the Jund shard of Alara—by animating the corpses of the mighty dragons that rule her home shard in order to claim it as her own. She draws power from death itself, so the sooner her minions fall, the faster they rise again to fight her battles.
Home Plane: Alara (Jund)
Featured In: All the Cairns of Jund, Associated Cards
Updates: Meren was just a neat one-off story. No further updates yet, but with Commander Anthology looming, it’s possible we’ll see more of her soon.
Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest
The death priest Mazirek occupies a high position in the rigid caste system of the insectile kraul of Ravnica. He leads the buzzing chants of the kraul rites, invoking the essence of decay to keep the great wheel of life and death turning.
Home Plane: Ravnica (Golgari Guild)
Featured In: Nothing
Updates: Nope
Anya, Merciless Angel
In the hours when days, battles and lives near their inevitable close, Anya soars into battle with deadly grace, drawing strength from the weakness of her enemies and hastening their passage into death. The Merciless Angel spares no one, but at least grants quick death to the deserving.
Home Plane: Unknown
Featured In: Nothing
Updates: None
Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas
The giants of Theros draw their strength from the land itself. Kalemne, though, has turned to a different source—mighty Iroas. Anything but a savage brute, Kalemne is a disciple of the soldier's god, leading superhuman troops—giants, dragons, and even angels—to glorious triumphs.
Since Preview Season is still ongoing, I’m bring you the latest Lore of Command, a series where I look at the lore and flavor of Legendary Creatures in Magic: The Gathering. Expect me back with Ashiok discussion next week!
Today I’m continuing my look back at supplemental legends, mainly from products like Commander, and examining what, if any, lore they’ve added added to their stories. In most cases, the answer will be they have not, but it’s worth noting who has had their story expanded on.
The third Commander product is the oh-so-cleverly named Commander 2014. The blurbs for each of the Commanders in this product were included on the Product Page and in their respect pamphlets, but interestingly all ten Commanders introduced this set were based on existing lore (however minor). This trend would continue going forward, with much of the 2015 and 2016′s supplemental set’s legends beind based on existing characters.
Nahiri, the Lithomancer
Nahiri, the Lithomancer by Eric Deschamps
Nahiri, the Lithomancer knows that victory comes from having the right weapons. This Planeswalker commander is a master of arms who creates powerful equipment and enchantments to prepare massive armies for the fight.
Home Plane: Zendikar
Featured In: The Lithomancer, Stirring from Slumber, Promises Old and New, Games, Stone and Blood, Emrakul Rises, Campaign of Vengeance, and Flavor Text
Updates: Nahiri made a bold return in the Shadows Over Innistrad block, where she was revealed to be behind luring Emrakul to the plane. Sorin had sealed her in the Helvault 1,000 years ago, explaining both her absence and why she has only just returned. She’s poised to be a major character who was merely introduced in a supplemental product (something C14 was known for). It’s a shame that none of her cards from the block are playable in her Commander deck.
Jazal Goldmane
Home Plane: Alara (Naya)
Featured In: Flight of the White Cat, Alara Unbroken, Flavor Text
Updates: Jazal is like, super dead. His death is the spark for the Alara Unbroken plot, not to mentions the ignition of his brother Ajani’s planeswalker spark. Ajani continues to honor his brother by carrying the double-bladed axe he made in honor of his brother.
Teferi, Temporal Archmage

Featured In: The First World is the Hardest, Duels of the Planeswalkers 2015, Dreams of the Damned, Nissa’s Resolve, At Any Cost, Retaliation of Ob Nixilis, Up In Flames, Named Cards, Flavor Text
Updates: Ob Nixilis has the honor of being one of the few characters in the game to have not one, not two, but three printed cards that can serve as Commanders. While he hates Nahiri, he loves conquest more. Since we saw him in the First World is the Hardest, we’ve seen much of his power restored with his forehead hedron removed, and he reactivated his spark by sabotaging the Gatewatch’s plans for imprisoning Ulamog. He was chased off Zendikar by the combined power of the initial Gatewatch.

He’s teams up with Grenzo for this purpose.
