Couple who killed Loretta Saunders sentenced to life in prison
The couple who lured Loretta Saunders into an apartment, killed her, and left her body in a hockey bag alongside a highway in New Brunswick have been sentenced to life in prison. Judge Josh Arnold of the Nova Scotia Supreme Court sentenced Victoria Henneberry to life in prison with no eligibility for parole for 10 years after she pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. Blake Leggette faces an automatic life sentence with no parole eligibility for 25 years after he pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. Arnold said the day Saunders was killed forever changed the many people in her life. In his ruling, Arnold accepted the joint sentencing recommendation from the Crown and defence. But the decision left Saunders' father angry.

Two statements of fact were submitted to the court that say Leggette and Henneberry were having financial difficulties soon after they moved into a sublet room in Saunders' apartment, which they had found through a Kijiji ad in January 2014. The documents say the two wanted to get out of Halifax, but they don't say why. "Mr. Leggette planned to kill Ms. Saunders, take her car and leave the province," both statements say. On Feb. 13, 2014, Saunders went to collect rent from the couple but they didn't have the money, and Henneberry lied when she said she had lost her bank card and needed to contact her bank, according to one of the statements. Leggette then grabbed Saunders by the throat and choked her, but the young woman fought back, managing to tear through the three plastic bags he pulled over her head. At one point, Leggette and Saunders fell down. He twice hit her head on the floor and she stopped moving.

The trial of Leggette and Henneberry was expected to begin today with opening arguments from the Crown after a jury was selected, more than a year after they were arrested in Ontario and brought to Nova Scotia to face the charges. A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for next Wednesday, where victim impact statements are expected to be delivered.

A judge ruled that there is enough evidence to proceed with charges against a couple in the murder of Halifax student Loretta Saunders. Blake Leggette, 26, and his 28-year-old girlfriend, Victoria Henneberry will now stand trial on first-degree murder charges. The victim, Saunders, was a pregnant 26-year-old Inuit student at Saint Mary's university. She was researching missing and murdered Aboriginal women when she disappeared from her apartment in February.
We have evidence that we'll feel comfortable putting forward. Ultimately, a jury is going to determine the outcome.

Saunders' body was later found near the Trans-Canada highway in New Brunswick. Much of the evidence against Leggette and Henneberry remains unknown as it is protected by a publication ban at this stage of the proceedings. Members of Saunders' family attended a preliminary hearing a week ago which was marked by her uncle lunging at the accused couple.
[T]he same logic that posits that the accused in Loretta’s case acted randomly also supports a decontextualized reading of indigenous over-incarceration in Canada. Despite the numerous inquiries suggesting that federal and provincial courts systematically discriminate against indigenous peoples, these rates continue to skyrocket under our government’s so-called “tough on crime” approach. Remarkably, the last annual report of the Correctional Investigator of Canada demonstrates that the rate of incarceration of indigenous women over the past decade has increased by 109%. As I demonstrate below, during the same decade that there is a notable spike in the number of missing and/or murdered indigenous women, the incarceration of indigenous women in federal institutions more than doubles. The over-representation of indigenous women in prison and the over-representation of indigenous women among the missing and/or murdered are clearly connected.
