The Dangers of Absolute Anti-Individualism
No one does anything on their own is true in the basic sense noone exists in a vacuum. However the second you use this fact by completely dismissing the individual and erase one’s human agency by saying “you are what we say you are and you are what we tell you to do and will make you” (you wholly are defined by us, and things outside yourself, you don’t matter) is the second you are no longer talking about a community. You’re talking about a clique at best and at worst a cult. Without one link, your chain is broken. Grind or neglect yourself or another link, your chain is doomed to rust away into oblivion and fall apart.
In short, the individual is not a lone wolf, something to be molded & leashed, and they are also not a puppet. They are a necessary, self aware knot in a shared rope and if that knot is forced to disappear, the whole rope unravels.
Capitalism is what makes individualism toxic.
And as a black trans woman, this anti-individualism that manifests in so many settlers who call themselves “communists” sets up vulnerable people to have no agency or choice and be blamed for their failings, and held to harsher scrutiny, and rituals of accountability out of entitlement, and for those like me in particular, a blind spot or intentional disregard for transmisogynoir. All war is class war! In community individuals have a choice to choose the influence they receive. The individual can walk away or stay and regardless is seen as a human being worthy of life & dignity and seen as someone with their own mind & nuances. Not a child needing corner time and management or criminal needing locked away. Where there is no choice, consent, and where there is the erasure of one’s life or sense of self there is only a cult exerting influence with ruthless oppressive efficiency.
History has shown us this before a great many times. Preferably, I’d, and many, would like to not wind up in a camp, or fallen victim to exile, neglect and abuse for “thought crimes” or “deviance” by a groups or collectives LARPing as the sole most important clique at the lunch table. This is not a moral argument, it’s certainly basic human decency, and most importantly it is material fact if you ever opened a book past elementary school. And there is a reason the settler “left” struggles with antiblackness and is littered with reformist and both egoistic tendencies and social chauvinism of the highest degrees. As a black woman, I’m tired. We know this pattern. It’s not our responsibility to fix it. And especially not ours alone.
If your anti-individualism morphs into control and ultimately chaining people’s agency, gatekeeping humanity, and who in the ordained word of the group is allowed dignity and to be a “real [insert label here]”, you lost the plot or are outright a supremacist. Time is not your friend and history has long since condemned you.
Like I might be a stupid usamerican but I don't think a non-European country having a 97% European descended, 3% Everybody Else population happens because everyone decided to get along. Almost feels like... There was a social push to... Purify out the non-whiteness... That there was desirability for Whiteness over other identities... Almost feels like... There is a word for that...
