Synopsis: Thomas and Lori celebrate their two year anniversary together. Lori thinks back over their relationship and Thomas gets a present he wasnât expecting.
Lori let out a soft hum as the heavy weight of sleep began to lift off of her, stretching a little as she awoke. But as she began to move, she felt an arm reflexively tighten around her waist. Warm breath tickled at her shoulder before a soft kiss was placed there.
âGood morning,â Thomas murmured, pressing kiss after kiss against her bare skin, trailing his mouth from her shoulder to the crook of her neck then up to her jaw.
She smiled sleepily, rolling in his embrace to face him, kissing him gently on the mouth as he pulled her even closer against him, âGood morning.â
His eyes were barely cracked open, but the sheer love and adoration in his gaze as he looked at her still made her feel giddy.
âHappy anniversary, my darling,â he said softly.
âHappy anniversary,â she kissed him again, âCan you believe itâs been two years?â
Their wedding day two years ago had been one of the best days of her life. It had been a simple affair, close friends and family only. Poppy and Luz had been included in the ceremony, Thomas and Lori promising to vows of love and family to both girls.
They had taken their relationship slow before that, neither wanting to rush things, knowing that they both had their own pasts and daughters to consider. But after nearly two years of dating and eventually living together, Thomas had proposed.
Since then, life had been perfect. Thomas had won the case against the car company he was suing in links to Soledadâs death, Lori was running the clothing store she worked at, Poppy and Luz were thriving at school together, both girls settling into their new family situation.
âIt has been an amazing two years,â Thomas smiled, brushing dark curls out of her face, âI love you so much.â
âI love you too,â she said.
They remained tangled in each otherâs embrace, lazily making out, in no rush to be anywhere. They had both taken the day off to celebrate their anniversary, and Alma had offered to have the girls last night so they could have the morning and most of the day together. They had a family dinner planned this evening, but for right now, they had nowhere to be except right where they were.
âYou stay right here,â Thomas told her after a while, âIâm going to go make us some breakfast.â
âYou donât have to do that, itâs both our anniversaries,â she reminded him as he began to rise from the bed.
âAnd there is no better way to celebrate that fact than to make my wife breakfast,â he insisted then headed out the door and she flumped back against the pillows.
She let out a content sigh as she snuggled back into the warmth of the bed. It had been a long road to get here, to be as happy as she was. After everything she had been through with Guy, both when they were first together and when he had come back into her life to try and take Poppy away from her, she had never let herself hope that she could have it all. She had been happy with just her and Poppy living their life, but then she had met Thomas and he had showed her a kind of love she hadnât believed she could have. They had become a family, and though she knew she could never replace Soledad, she loved Luz are though she were her own, and she knew Thomas loved Poppy the same way.
She left the bedroom once the delicious smell of bacon began to waft up the stairs. She pulled on a pair of pyjama shorts and one of Thomasâ old t shirts and headed down to the kitchen. She found the breakfast bar already laden with her favourite; pancakes with scrambled eggs and bacon, maple syrup at the ready for her to pour and a glass of orange juice each. Thomas turned around when he heard her approach, smiling when he saw her.
He spun her under his arm in time to the music that was coming from the radio as she leaned up on her tiptoes to greet him with a kiss. Their embrace began to grow more heated, broken only when he shook his head and reminded her that their breakfast would get cold. She hopped up onto the stool and began to hungrily dig in, complimenting his cooking between every mouthful.
When they had finished, Thomas took his glass in hand, âTo you, my beautiful wife,â he raised his glass.
âTo you, my wonderful husband,â she raised hers as well, clinking it against his.
She took a sip, but the moment the juice hit her tongue and she realised that there was champagne in it, she spat it back into the glass. Thomasâ eyes widened with concern, âLori, whatâs wrong? Is the juice off? Iâm so sorry, I squeezed the oranges myself, I thought they were fresh and I-â
âItâs not the juice,â she assured him, pushing the glass aside, âIt was the champagne.â
âWas there something wrong with it?â he frowned, âI wanted to make us mimosas to celebrate. It was one of the bottles from our wedding day, it wasnât opened, it should have been fine-â
She reached across the table and took his hand, squeezing it tight, âThere was nothing wrong with it. I can imagine itâs actually amazing. But...â
âBut what?â he asked.
âI canât have any,â she told him.
She waited for the ball to drop, but he only looked more confused, âWeâre not driving today, and one glass wonât hurt.â
A smile spread across her face, âItâs not me Iâm concerned about.â
He blinked at her, and yet it still didnât click. She rolled her eyes then excused herself, hurrying into the other room. She returned carrying a small wrapped box, handing it to him.
âWe said we werenât going to do presents this year,â he frowned.
âI know, but this is just a very little present,â she assured him, âThe timing just worked out to give it to you today. I was going to give it to you later, butâŠâ
He opened the box, and as his eyes focused on what was inside, he let out a soft breath. He was quiet for a long moment as he took it in, then picked it up, examining it properly. He glanced at his wife, tears shimmering in his eyes.
âIs thisâŠ? Are weâŠ?â
Tears of her own began to well up in her eyes, watching as he kept looking from her, to the positive pregnancy test in his hand, and back to her.
She nodded and he was on his feet immediately, wrapping his arms around her. He lifted her clean off her feet, spinning her around. She let out a squeal of surprise, clinging tight to his shoulders. When he set her down her took his face in his hands and kissed her hard. She kissed him back, both of their cheeks damp with tears.
âAre you happy?â she asked softly.
âHappy?â his voice was barely a whisper, âLori, happy doesnât even begin to explain the joy I feel right now.â
âI know we werenât trying, and we were going to talk to the girls about how they felt about it first, but it feels right, doesnât it?â
âIt feels so right,â he agreed, âI love you, Lorelai Mendez-Day,â he hand reached down to press against her abdomen, âAnd I love you, little one. I canât wait to meet you. You donât know how lucky you are yet. You have got a wonderful, beautiful and loving mom, and you have got two sisters who are going to love you and protect you for the rest of your life.â
âYouâve got a pretty amazing dad as well,â she said, her hand coming to rest over his, âYouâre going to be so loved.â
He took her hand in his and intertwined their fingers, drawing her in for another kiss, âBest anniversary gift ever.â
Riding in the car with my mother the other day, she remarked that I am judgmental of women who care a lot about their appearance. She told me that she wears makeup every day not because she feels she has to, but because it is fun. She explained that Botox and plastic surgery are things that can help women feel good about themselves. âYour graying hair is making you look older,â she said. Yeah, I knowâŠ
I also know that the more women dye their graying hair, the older I will look when I donât. The more women rid themselves of wrinkles, the older I will look when I donât. The more women starve themselves, the fatter I will look when I donât.

Come with me. Letâs open the door to a parallel universe. You unlock this door with a key of imagination, just like on The Twilight Zone. Here in this parallel world, the rules are different because gender roles are flipped. Loving parents and teachers accept this strange culture as if itâs not so bad, or perhaps even good. As if the reverse of this culture couldâŠ
"Ageism is a life-altering injustice affecting women in ways that are different than the effects on men â different in age of onset and degree and personal consequence. If we continue to be erased in the second half of our lives, we will remain stuck in a perpetual cycle of conflating youth with greater social relevance in the first half of our lives, and the patriarchal axiom that women are only valuable when they are young, hot and fertile will continue unchallenged." - Lori Day
