Lorna shuffles round heir small living room space as Fen says goodbye to her brother, kicking off her shoes. She's humming the song that she'd heard playing at the bar, spinning around with a grin as Ro's toys on the floor become a blur of colors. Before she realizes it, Lorna's toppling sideways but not into the couch or onto the floor, rather into strong arms that keep her more or less upright. "Fen!" she whispers loudly, pushing away and twisting again. "Remember w-when we met? They played that s-song that– that goes like," Lorna bites off a tune, humming a bit off key, and spins around once more, amusement crossing her flushed face. "And you were just, you were just s-standing there," she glances up at him, eyes bright. "In my way!" she exclaims a bit too loudly, hand covering her mouth. "In my way" she repeats in a stage whisper. "A-aren't you glad I," she hiccups, "said s-something?" @blackheartatl
"You know," Lorna says, waving a hand at her brother before she takes a handful of chips "you should really come around more." One and a half beers is more than she's had in months and Loran can feel the buzz settling in. Fen had been able to watch Rowen so she could get out with her brother and hanging with Miles is the most normal thing she's felt she's done since returning to Atlanta. "Ro would love to see you." She nods enthusiastically, the alcohol settling in and for once not dragging her down. Maybe it's the environment, a lively bar, or the company, a brother she's missed dearly, or maybe today was just an up day for her. Either way, she'll take it, shoving the basket of chips away towards Miles. "I'm gonna eat them all. I try not to keep them around because Ro can't really have them yet? But he sees us having them and gets upset that he can't. And honestly Fen can crush a bag one sitting, so we'd go through them too fast anyway." Lorna takes another swig of her beer, nodding at Miles after she realizes she's been talking about herself too much. He might not care but once she's noticed, she feels too self-aware, gesturing at him instead. "How's work? Not tired of dogs yet?" @secrettyrant
Lorna grew up in the comfort of a loving home. Solidly middle class, there were years where they had to tighten their belts and others when they were able to enjoy small luxuries. In everything she learned to be grateful and to make the most of whatever they had, in feast or famine. It was the Adair way.
In school, while she wasn't the smartest, Lorna worked hard and her teachers saw that she was more suited for the creative arts. They encouraged her to pursue that in college and by some miracle (and a lot of determination), she graduated high school at sixteen and headed off to college. Neither of her parents had gone but they were proud to see her and her siblings go.
Lorna had always known she wanted to live in the Pacific Northwest and had applied to school in Portland, getting into a graphic design program where she fell in love with the medium. But art isn't the only thing she fell in love with.
She met Fenrir through a friend of a friend at some music fest, bonding over their shared hometown and love of the great outdoors. What started as a one-off hike here or there soon became a frequent occurrence as they both fell hard for each other. Lorna knew he was the one for different reasons, his kindness and generosity towards herself and others, his patients as she worked on pieces for hours on end. The way he held her tight and helped her get home when her father died. The way he waited for her to finish her degree, celebrating harder than even her family did when she walked across that stage. And then they were off on their great adventure.
Traveling around the country together in a little RV they renovated, life was simple as it was sweet. Lorna freelanced at the same time, inspired by her life, her love, and the world around them. Little did they know that their greatest adventures lay ahead. Parenthood came for them two years ago when they welcomed little Rowen Adair Cross into their lives and everything changed for the better. It was a journey they were excited to be on together. Being parents was hard work but they made it seem easy between Fen's jobs and Lorna's work. She remembered the way her dad would tell her to be grateful in feast and famine and it was easy when life felt like the former. Feast after feast. Little bright spots that illuminated the sky like stars. And the brightest little star was born in November of 2022. Autumn Adair Cross came into the world with lungs that could be heard from coast to coast. A shock of red hair, bright blue eyes and the sweetest smile — their little girl completed their family.
But famine came when they least expected it. February in Nevada never felt so cold as the day when Lorna’s world tipped on its axis. Everyone told her that it wasn't her fault, that SIDs was called that for a reason but it didn't matter. Her little Autumn was gone, and she’d taken half of Lorna’s heart with her.
The months that followed felt like a constant numbing cold had overtaken her and only the sound of her son's laughter could bring a faint smile to her lips. Lorna was fading day by day, and finally Fen made the decision to move them closer to each of their families. They were both suffering but Lorna couldn't see straight, much less make any decisions. Fen took on that burden and moved them to Georgia.
People say time heals but she's not so sure about that. Atlanta feels different now that she's back, not quite like home anymore, but maybe that’s just because she's different.
Her words made him stop his actions and his heart fell into his stomach. He had grown a liking for Erik’s daughter. He saw in her that many of his students had. A sense of being lost.
“No, you don’t..”
His voice was soft.
“I have seen death. I have felt her cold hands. It’s a void filled existence. Loneliness, despair, regret. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.”
so in canon, wanda and lorna’s relationship is dreadfully underdeveloped. pietro and lorna actually have a relationship that is Developed with Real Characteristics. wanda and lorna on the other hand are like ….. ????? really up in the air. they were in uncanny xmen together for a couple of issues. lorna made appearances in the OG HoM, but then you didn’t actually see wanda interact with anyone there unless she was killing or resurrecting them. do you taste my salt?
anyways, wanda was in an issue of all new x-factor that i really enjoyed and it is, to date, probably the best shown canon of wanda and lorna’s sisterly relationship. it started out awkward, wanda showed up looking FINE AF, they went to like ??? a renaissance fair, lorna got wanda drunk. i’ve read here and there that some people didn’t like wanda’s characterization, which i do understand. it was a bit questionable because i mean, wanda has lived in the US for a decade and at some points it felt like lorna was almost coddling her for being foreign? like the writing literally made wanda seem like she didn’t even know what beer was lmao she is from the eastern bloc and is a grown woman. she knows what beer is. ANYWAYS i personally thought the issue was really sweet. they wore matching outfits except wanda’s was purple and lorna’s was green. it was cute! and i’m not so critical that i can’t enjoy that despite weird writing. at the end of it all, wanda and lorna had settled into their own little groove and it was a pretty satisfying conclusion.
they were together in the 2015 HoM AU comic as well! i mean they didn’t interact a ton, but there was a panel of them and pietro at breakfast before wanda leaves and makes a magic surfboard out of the wall in a fit of rage at tommy and billy for causing trouble. anyways, they seemed like they got along well enough! i’m always thirsty for seeing the whole family hangin’ which is basically what that gave me.
as you can see, their canon relationship is barren. i like to think that after the interaction in all new x-factor, wanda and lorna continued to build their relationship. i think lorna finds wanda a bit weird but then, everyone thinks wanda is weird. she’s more similar to pietro but WAY KINDER than pietro. i think lorna would have an awesome relationship with billy and tommy as the Cool Aunt that buys them alcohol or hides them at her place when mom is angry. i think they keep in touch, maybe get lunch when they have the time or text or even facetime whenever they can. wanda has been soooooo defined by her relationships with men that i really squeeze all i can out of her female relationships. i desire so much for wanda to have a healthy, trusting bond with her sister. they both deserve that, so that’s what i (myself) am giving them. they can talk shit about each other’s respective teammates and it be cool. they can go to the gym together. they can do whatever they want together and it doesn’t have to revolve around some tragedy like HoM or their father. i guess thats why the HoM AU was fun to read bc like, it wasn’t sad. it was cool. i love the royals i gotta say. (wanda’s characterization in that is another rant i won’t get into).
