Dashcon 2 2 overlaps with Veld this year, which means that Toronto is hosting both a high concentration of tumblrinas (affectionate) and EDM festival-goers. I’m not too clear on how much overlap exists between these groups.

So I’m just starting a rewatch of LoK and thinking about how Korra’s journey as the Avatar, in many ways, starts with her running away from her childhood home toward being the Avatar, contrasting with Aang running away from home to avoid being the Avatar.

I realize this is a losing linguistic battle but fwiw:

Sentient = able to perceive or feel things. Your local rats and squirrels are sentient, the moth fluttering around a lamp is sentient, the betta fish at the pet store are sentient.

A lot of the time, I think “sentient” is used when the appropriate word is “sapient,” which refers to human-like wisdom and intelligence. Centaurs and satyrs in Percy Jackson (and the boy-who-lived wizard books by the TERF author) are sapient. Thomas the Tank Engine is sapient. Chewbacca is sapient.

Do with this what you will.

Musing on a…proposition? I got yesterday, under the cut

I have this longtime friend from undergrad. We met online in the comments section of an inflammatory political post related to our uni, though we either attended different campuses or were separated by the pandemic. I delivered marijuana edibles to him while he was doing a 2-week quarantine at one point.

When he went to do his MSc in Europe, I invited him to join me for a day when I was visiting Italy, and we celebrated our birthdays together—we’ve bonded over the fact that we were born on the same day of the same year. Twins! Never mind that we look nothing alike.

Despite the exact same age, because he was a year behind me in school, I guess I mentally classed him as a friend/little brother without further consideration.

He’s now doing his PhD, back in the same country as me but too far away for a quick weekend trip. We hung out the last time he was in my city.

Up until now, he’s been one of the few friends I’ve been especially up front and honest about my finances and family’s finances with, largely because I thought we were in fairly similar tax brackets, and had reasonably similar approaches to investing.

He informed me pretty recently that he’s got a trust fund, set up by his grandfather (who is still living), which he’s come into partial access of recently—not “billionaire that, if murdered, might cool the planet a degree,” but enough that he can enjoy his PhD, and if he works hard and secures the kind of career his PhD is known to sometimes lead toward, he could retire pretty young.

Another aspect of it being partial is that there’s a clause set up for his own future kids—a separate sum to be divided among them, once he has them. He thinks he could have two or three and set them up comfortably.

This ties into a different part of our conversation, when we were discussing my relationship with my boyfriend. He interrupted the flow of it to ask if he could ask a question “without hurting our friendship.” With my go-ahead, he then said, “If you’re back in the dating pool, hit me up first,” followed by “(0 debt, $[redacted, single digit] million net worth. Nerdy, kinky and Wants kids),” “Pretend this was apart of the first msg,” and “Oki now this convo never happened,” before switching the conversation back to asking about my new job.

And I just. I have feelings but I’m not sure what they are? Like, until now, I didn’t harbour a crush on him, but I do value our relationship a lot. He took me to my first drag show, and I remember feeling what I think was gender euphoria (I was high and a bit drunk at the time). It’s also easier to shake off the “little brother” concept as we’re out of undergrad. He does have an actual older sister, so that might contribute to his “little brother” vibe.

My current boyfriend and I have a pretty big age gap—not enough to be on a reality tv show, but still. I’m not inclined to do it solely for the bit, but it would pretty funny if I went from an older guy to a guy who is almost exactly my age.

I suppose the best thing to do is Not overthink it, particularly when he prefaced it all with asking that this not hurt our friendship.

When I think about how much I value the finances of a romantic partner, I tend to view it as, I don’t necessarily want the money for me, but for the security and wellbeing of our future kids. For lack of a better word, it feels weird to think about a longtime, not-unattractive friend saying, “hey, I find you attractive but won’t act on it if you’re not receptive to it—just, if we were together, our kids would have a comfy trust fund & inheritance lined up for them.”
