Images of the Superstitions in Arizona
Here are some photos that were taken of the Superstition mountains that include one of the landmarks that allegedly mark the location of the Lost Dutchman mine, Weaver's Needle (the legend goes that the shadow of Weaver's Needle crosses the entrance to the mine at Easter). But once again you are cautioned very strongly against looking for the Lost Dutchman, it has been fatal to many over the years including to a fellow Coloradoan just a couple of years back. The climate of the Superstitions is very similar to that of Death Valley and the terrain is much more difficult. When we were there, despite the fact that we were not seriously looking for the Lost Dutchman, we still encountered prospector's armed with high powered rifles. There are a lot of lost mine and treasure legends that are not nearly so dangerous. Please, try one of the other lost mine and/or treasure legends that are included in "The Complete American Gold Prospectors Handbook."
The first picture is of stone formations that the Apache believed were people that were turned into stone. The second is taken from the interior of Geronimo's Cave. The cave was Geronimo's hideout for several years and because of the difficult terrain was undiscovered until native US army scouts followed the smoke from his campfires. The third and fourth give you some idea of the difficulty of the terrain. The fifth is about the only one that displays any natural beauty of the place, that being the Saguaro cacti in bloom. The sixth is of the previously mentioned Weaver's Needle and the final is of the interior of Geronimo's cave. The location was ingenious. It could only be reached through a large fracture in the mountain behind it (which also accumulated water from the rare rains).
Here’s 4/5 of my parties from the last two years.
