Lost Perception Universe Explained: Magics
I’m not particularly sure how magic works in canon lore for the world of FR but I have made a few rules and taken a few creative privileges on how magic works in Sornieth.
What is Magic
Magic is basically the life force of the land and its inhabitants. Dragons have classified these magics into two different categories. Inner and Outer Magic. This is a belief that all of dragon kind accepts but the beastclan do not. they strongly believe that there is only Outer Magic that gives life to everyone. They believe in a give and take style, the land gives them life and in return, they take care of the land itself.
What is Outer Magic
Outer magic is the magic that seeps out of the earth, trees, plants, rock, whatever. This magic can be used to effect (affect?) the world around the user. So if the user wishes to start a fire, they must manipulate the magic around the woods to ignite it and boom, fire! Same thing if they wish to dig using magic, they must manipulate the magic in the earth to disperse the mud and rocks to create a hole...or they can just make an explosion but that one is a lot harder to do. One of the most common uses of Outer Magic is the creation of nests. To take care of eggs a dragon pair has layed, they need to continuely manipulate the magic around the nest with that lands specific elemental magic. Most of the time, it is easy to do and even the most useless Outer Magic users can do it. There are circumstances in which a dragon is hired to tend a nest though. This is ussually in cases of nests located on borders of two elemental areas (Say Light and Shadow Lands) which will need more control to get the right magic of the land. The most extreme circumstance is where the land itself lacks its magic, This is ussually because a great war/ battle had been held there, an emporer had been created which sucks up Outer Magic to form or the area was or still is infested with the Shade.
What is Inner Magic
Inner magic is basically the life force of a creature. By manipulating inner magic, dragons (or other creatures capable of it) can cure illnesses, create magical weapons (elemental bolts for example) or protect themselves from harmful attacks. This is by far the most imporant aspect of a dragons life. If their inner magic is out of wack or they deplete it, they grow sick, weak and are desecitable to deadly infections or illnesses. While delpeting inner magic will not kill a dragon, it does ussually lead to death if they are not properly taken care of. In extreme cases a healer (who is adpt at both inner and outer magic) must manipuklate the outer magic into inner magic for the depeleted dragon. This can be very dangeous as this can lead to distruption of the dragons original inner magic and cause pain, inability to contol magic or even death in some cases. If this option must be used it is easier to do so in the homeland of that dragon. While it can be done anywhere it is considered a last ditch effort(which you must have consent for) or if you talk to some dragons, torture.
Magic In Battles
Of course, magic is used in battles quite commonly. There are two types of ways to damage an oppent. The use of Outer Magic to damage them physically with their surroundings (think using Fosslize or Disorient) or more commonly using Inner magic to do physical or Inner magic damage. Physical damage is quite simple, focus your inner magic on a spot on your body you can then materlize that inner magic into a physical present and harm the opponent (this is bolts or slashes. Bolts take more contol than slashes) Now it is possible to do inner magic damage as well. This can dioreient them, cause blindness, make them more susecptical to damage or even temporarly block them from controling their inner magic.
The Shade
This goes without mentioning but the shade is incredibly dangerous to dragon kind. The shade does not appear to have any inner magic, this usually means it generates outer magic like other things. this is not the case, however. It appears to suck up all of the Outer Magic in an area, then move onto the next. It literally feeds off of magic. This is one possible way to make an area not suitable for nests, by literally taking the magic out. The scary thing is, there have been reports of dragons facing a small portion of the Shade and come back depleted. So depelted infact that they never wake up. No amount of manipulation of either magic can wake them. It seems that not only does the Shade feed off of Outer magic but it could possible feed off of Inner magic as well. This has yet to be confirmed however. There are some scientist out there that wish to try and prove this theory but to do so would mean completely depleting a dragons Inner magic. The has been a lot of contoversy on this topic which has yet to be solved.
