JEP AND DEP SUPPORT LOST RAGAS IN SYDNEY.
SATURDAY JUNE 20.
From Down Under- Lost Ragas fantastic new album -Trans Atlantic Highway.
We are big fans of Lost Ragas here at Dashvilled (read previous reviews here) - so when our copy of their new album ‘Trans Atlantic Highway’ arrived on vinyl in the mail we got very excited.
Lost Ragas are stylistically hard to pin down - i guess a fair modern comparison would be Wilco- consummate musicians that cross pollinate musical genres but retain their own personality and character- be it modern Country meets Blues- and like Wilco - Lost Ragas know how to make a tasteful classic pop hook (ear worm as the Germans say -ya ya) that will stay in your head for days, in the best way.
Trans Atlantic Highway hits you over the head with pop hooks on the first two songs (can someone please send Marijuana Mornings track two to Willie Nelsons manager- seriously) Its track three that we started to fall heavy for the album, Murderous and Insane.
“Shadows that woke me Come again no more I’m going to protect you That’s what love is for. Babe, you’re murderous and insane And I don’t want you To ever go and change”.
Track 4 though is the album highlight for us - Colours in the Sky - has the feels of a modern Hank Williams singing on the set of Twin Peaks with a bone shaking Baritone Guitar solo.
“When only darkness fills your eyes You lost your way but you found a sign You’ve seen the colours in the sky You’ve seen the colours in the sky”.
Song for Dale starts off with the amazing line “I don’t wanna to die in the hotel room, i wanna fly so high....” which is an ode to Dale Buggins - the Australian stuntman version of Evil Knievel who died doing what he loved best...
The last song of the album ‘I Never Knew’ sounds like the love child of Nick Cave, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings playing the last song at the saddest hoe down ever known.
“You can always find me In some crowded bar I just sit here by the window Wondering where you are Come back and I’ll tell you What makes me so blue Yours was a love I never knew”.
Understated, dark and from a real place the Lost Ragas present classic songs with their own unique sound and character- the inventive lapsteel meeting the slow tearing blues and classic 70′s country rock rhythm section is a solid foundation to lay out this fantastic album.
In Matt Walkers vocals we hear the perfect balance of fractured darkness, remorse, sadness and beauty - accompanied by the soaringly sweet backup vocal harmonies - its these sad songs that make you happy that you are feeling sad.....
