Hey! For the book ask: 17 and 25?
17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?
So many! Priory of the Orange Tree surprised me because I thought my attention span would wane, since it’s such a long book, but it never did because the story is *that good*.
Another was the Brown Sisters series, which is a set (3) of contemporary romcoms and they were all phenomenal. And best of all, they can be read independently, so it’s not a daunting thought to dive into the books. They’re quick and easy, steamy and hilarious.
Also Legendborn and Raybearer, both of which feature non-white main characters and have fabulous other rep in them too.
25. What reading goals do you have for next year?
I’m going to try to read 50 books. That has been my goal for the last few years and I keep falling juuuuuust shy of it, but hopefully 2022 is the year! I also want to get through the mound of unread books that have piled up around my apartment, so I’m going to figure out some sort of system of not letting myself buy any new books until I’ve finished X number of ones I already own.
Thanks for playing!
Send me bookish asks
1940s AU with Nine as a pilot and Rose a mechanic 😍😍😍😍😍 yes, please!
I KNOW RIGHT??
It’s just a perfect concept. I cannot take full credit, as it was a concept that came from talking to @gingerteaonthetardis (because Abbey has galaxy brain and I just mooch off of it sometimes).
But there is something very compelling about Rose in olive drab coveralls, with a grease smudge on her brow and her hair tied up with a pink bandana and Nine watching her do maintenance on his plane (which is blue because I say so).
And there’s also something about them meeting at a local pub while off duty and she’s in a nice dress and her hair is pinned up, and they dance around and have the best time.
And there’s DEFINITELY something about her chewing on a thumbnail when she hears planes have been shot down from his unit and she’s so worried about him that she’s tempted to steal a plane and fly after them herself, but she doesn’t and when he comes in, his plane a wreck but so blessedly ALIVE, she doesn’t even try to stop herself from running to him and throwing her arms around him- and he’s definitely not complaining because he clings just as much and swings her around in a hug just for the joy of being alive. And then, one day, down the road, there’s absolutely a big damn kiss when they both survive the war and they can spend everyday holding hands and bumping shoulders as they walk down the sidewalk.
For the fic reader meme: #6 and 8?
6) a fic with a favorite trope
Hmm I can’t really idenitfy specific tropes but more topics or AUs
Bad Wolf Bay post JE - Her and Tentoo working things out.
You Didn’t Even Regenerate by .super_powerful_queen_slayyna (Explicit)
Dream of a Fantastic Life by Dameruth
I have a bunch bookmarked but these are the first two I found.
Housemates AU when it’s a group like this one:
That Extra Bit of Effort (Ten Rose AU) but lots of other characters by neokattz
Thief AU
To Cut a Diamond (Ten/Rose AU) by Stratisphyre
Dimension Hopping Rose and AUs to JE
Tricky Business (Ten/Rose and Jack) by Wordmusician
Historical AUs
When The Lights Go Back On Again (Ten/Rose AU) by runningsissors
Artist AU
The Rose of Fortuna by @skyler10fic (Ten /Rose AU)
Dance AU
Open Call by @gingerteaonthetardis (Nine/Rose AU)
Mythology AU or anything really
The Garden Where All Beauties Be by @gingerteaonthetardis (Nine/Rose AU)
And that is probably more than people wanted to know LOL but it’s a good sampling for 2020 reads. I enjoy more Doctor/Rose in DW universe but not many people write those anymore.
8) “sir that’s my emotional support fic”
Ahhh that would be the TenToo/Rose ones with happy endings and none of the Rose refuses to accept him or is pretty awful type stuff. Which is in most fic so it narrows what I consider cheer me up fic and help me through bad days type fic.
I’d probably go to:
@darth-tella
@gingerteaonthetardis
Lizramblr and I cannot remember if she’s on tumblr
Your fic the lovely Christmas AU stuck in the lab has really helped me when I’ve been stressed or read some depressing Christmas fic.
Christmas Eve (stuck) In The Lab by @lostinfic (Ten/Rose AU)
Thanks for asking!
Readers Fic Ask Meme
Busy working late, because who needs a social life, really.
For the WIP thing, I’m curious about the Isis one.
This one is just a very rough idea, but i thought it would be interesting to have Ten and Rose visit Behbeit el-Hagar in the Nile River Valley after an adventure in which they are reunited with Jack Harkness. They are playful and silly and explaining a little more about Bad Wolf and just being flirty idiots. What they don’t know is there is a young boy hidden who overhears their conversation. The parallels between the mythology surrounding the goddess, Isis, and Bad Wolf are because they young boy is convinced he is in the presence of three gods and spreads the word about them to his village. Another fic in which the Doctor and Rose inspire a bit of human history.
Here are a few notes on what I want to incorporate:
Giggling as she perched on a rocky outcrop. “Come here.” “Nope, I’m on my throne.”
Isis was clever “more clever than a million gods.”
Power of life and death, her husband is reincarnated (12 times), brings him back to life, tricks Ra into telling her his secret name which holds power over him. ‘Names have power, rose.”
The Doctor’s smile is so bright when he looks at Rose that he can be no other than the sun god. Maybe the Doctor lifts Rose in his arms and after her protesting “put me down, Doctor, ‘m too heavy.” “Nonsense, Rose, you’re as light as a feather. Superior Time Lord physiology.” Exchange is overheard and that is the origin of the Isis uses a feather to weight the souls of the dead.
Which WIP do you want to know about?
Hello! The First Noel: Do you have a favorite tree ornament? and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing: Do you still believe in Santa? If not when did you stop?
The First Noel: Do you have a favorite tree ornament?
Here’s another favorite ornament! I have no idea why. It’s just been a constant for me every Christmas that I can remember.
Hark! The Herald Angels Sing: Do you still believe in Santa? If not when did you stop?
In a way! My parents never pushed the factual reality of it, more that it was a wonderful, global game of pretend inspired by a historical legend, just like how we knew the characters at Disney World were just pretending and still excitedly got photos and autographs anyway. But we were really big into it with the letters in the mail and photo at the mall and cookies on a plate and “look what Santa brought!” being our Christmas morning catchphrase. (Though, of course, after a certain age with a joke and wink.)
I did want to believe, though, and tended to see magic all around me in life anyway, even when others thought I was cute but a bit odd. To the point that one Christmas, I heard hooves on the rooftop before I fell asleep one Christmas Eve! This concerned my parents because they had no explanation for this. haha Coincidentally, early that morning, some old, sweet, lovely people with a farm drove around to kids’ houses who believed and left hay and a few carrot tops in the driveway. So while I knew it was my parents setting out the hard-to-wrap stuff and stocking stuffers in our stockings as unwrapped gifts “from Santa” eventually, I did also lean into the mystery of the unexplained too.
Sometime in my preteen years, I sat down with my mom and we talked about their approach. My mom said they always wanted us to believe in the idea of Santa---not of naughty or nice (we didn’t really go there) or of the literal story---but of surprising someone with generosity and the joy of giving. My dad lives this out really well in his daily life, too. So I still like to have faith in the magic. Not of getting presents that show up in the morning or in a jolly old man and his elves, but faith in the spirit of Christmas, that we live by Santa’s example of giving others joy and light and hope, and not asking for anything but that they believe too and spread it as they are able. It’s a tradition and a folktale and a game of pretend, but it’s also a very real reminder of the effect we can have on others when we give and receive with open hands and hearts. I don’t want to forget the truth at the core of the fantasy.
