Pathfinder Race: Mabotts (for Lost Literature)
The mabotts are a purely metropolitan race - they may have at one point started as humans as part of an enclosed enclave in a great city, but after years of exposure to a combination of the natural magicks of witches and the technical magicks of the artificers. Living up in high towers, surrounded by cat familiars, soon they were changed.
And with their change, the ley lines of the cities brought this change to certain humans and half-elves born within both mystical grottos and urban areas; no one is quite sure what makes such a child born to be a mabott, but there is obviously some sort of system for choosing them.
Nowadays, some mabotts are born by mabott parents, or more likely, by a mabott father who wandered through town and never came back...
In a city, mabotts are often employed in intellectual pursuits, being librarians, artificers, detectives, constables, models and burlesque dancers. And if anyone argues those aren't intellectual pursuits, most mabotts know how to use a variety of weaponry and where the squishy parts of their enemy's body is.
+2 Intelligence, +2 Charisma - Mabotts are cunning and brilliant, and quite good to look at.
Normal Speed - A mabott's base speed is 30 feet.
Envoy - Mabott's with an Intelligence score of 11 or higher gain the following spell-like abilities (the caster level is equal to the user's character level):
1/day—comprehend languages, detect magic, detect poison, read magic.
Item Affinity - A mabott can increase the caster level of a magic item they are using by +1, once per day.
Knowledgeable - A mabott loves to be near a library. All mabotts can spend an hour reading to gain a +1 bonus to any one Knowledge skill of their choice until they awake the next morning. They can read for another hour to regain the bonus or change the bonus to another Knowledge skill.
Mixed Magic - A mabott has a +2 bonus on caster level checks to overcome spell resistance.
Urban Arcana - A mabott has a +1 dodge bonus to AC when fighting in a city.
Weapon Familiarity - All mabotts are proficient in the use of the longsword, longbow and boomerang. If your campaign has guns, replace the pistol with the longbow.
Languages - Common, Elven. Bonus Languages - Any
