Oughta have a sticker that says “Best when played on a snowy Tuesday night when you should either be working or sleeping” because that’s what it is. Like if Yo La Tengo made “Fakebook” over a weekend, or that nineties group Mazzy Star turned into just a couple vaguely weary smart alecks, dispensing occasional wisdom and reporting on what they’re looking at right now. #HumpDayJams Numba 13 goes to denim master @kurtvile . . This is exactly the kind of solo album you’d hope would follow last year’s brilliant #CourtneyBarnett duet #LottaSeaLice —- the late 30s Philly Rocker is at it again with long jams, solid riffs, and simple wisdom for those who thought they’d die young and still hope they won’t get old. My big #recommendation goes to his track “Rollin With the Flow.” - a personal new fave and a breezy homage to classic Levon Helm-esque groove. And if you haven’t heard his interview on @marcmaron ‘s #WTF - do it. He’s very cool. Obviously. #FavoriteAlbumsof2017: Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile – 'Lotta Sea Lice' ... Two of the weirdest, quirkiest songwriters get together and create an album. That’s what happens on Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile’s 'Lotta Sea Lice', and together they are unstoppable and crafted one of the year’s finest and most amusing records. On “Over Everything”, they sing about wearing proper hearing protection. In addition to the quirky lyrics, the two jam real hard or just like in the living room, such as the family-influenced “Continental Breakfast”. While the two get a bit "serious" in covering each other's work (Barnett’s “Outta The Woodwork” and Vile’s “Peepin’ Tom”. They also cover “Fear is Like A Forest” by Jen Cloher, Barnett’s girlfriend. The record gets really silly with “Blue Cheese”, singing about food, and most notably, a strange place to place blue cheese. It’s obvious Vile and Barnett had a ton of fun making this record. From singing “nanny nanny poo poo” in “Blue Cheese”, or all the different ways Kurt Vile can describe being alone, it’s a blast to listen.
