This is exactly the kind of solo album you’d hope would follow last year’s brilliant #CourtneyBarnett duet #LottaSeaLice —- the late 30s Philly Rocker is at it again with long jams, solid riffs, and simple wisdom for those who thought they’d die young and still hope they won’t get old. Stephen’s 2016 album #Anagrams blew me away with its starkingly unique complexities and deeply earnest lyrics about depression, anxiety, boredom, and heartbreak. Now he’s back with a new single, “Mom” that seems to be a brutally honest letter to his Mother, detailing specific memories and how he feels about them as he gets older. Originally a drummer-for-hire for bands like @portugaltheman @_fake_nudes_ and many other Los Angeles based artists, he eventually decided to pursue his own music. After obsessing with their 2007 magnum opus New Magnetic Wonder, the Apples in Stereo became something of a cult pop-rock darling to me. Clearly influencing the then-rising indie scene associated with bands like @vampireweekend , (and inspiring the endlessly creative @elijah._.wood to direct a couple of their music videos) Apples in Stereo had found a niche that would sit somewhere between Yo La Tengo and The Beatles. Recently I’ve been sinking back in to their ever-pleasant earlier works and found myself playing “Seems So” on repeat.
