Chapter 14: A Traitor in Our Midst

Logan’s brain finally caught up with the entirety of the situation. “Hang on, the advisors and my mother wanted to wage war and your solution was for us to get married? Actually, officially, and not at all as part of an elaborate plot or ruse?”

She rolled her eyes and pushed his shoulder. “There he is,” she grumbled under her breath.

“But where is the woman of action? Of sharp daggers and sharper wit. Surely cracking some skulls is well within—“

“This is action, Logan. Long form action in the way of an ultimate chess match. We have to be smarter. More cunning. The Destructors continue to get the jump on us and it is because we are reactionary. You need to get married to claim the crown and I am your betrothed. And while we orchestrate a wedding, we can investigate. It’s simple.”

The corner of his mouth quirked up but his face became rigid once more. “But this is not something you can just undo with a quick slice of your sword. What of your knighthood? Your duty to the realm? Your life? You cannot forego all that you have—“

“It is done,” she snapped. “You are now sacrificing your independence. I shall offer up mine as well. For the good of the realm.”

“For the good of the realm,” he echoed the old saying back to her.

Logan heals and finds out about Louise's proposition. The lads visit him. Logan has an epiphany about the traitor.

Chapter 13: Stab First, Questions Later

“Limp.”

He looked at her sideways. “Why?”

“We are trying to pass as beggars, you nitwit. Beggars are malnourished. Sickly. Not primped would-be defecting kings.”

He glared at her, but adopted a rather impressive limp.

“Is it not terribly presumptuous to assume beggars would have defects?”

She glared at him. “Would you shut your hole? We are not theorizing at present, but fleeing for our lives.”

“Just seemed a bit privileged…”

“Do not start with me on privilege!” she hissed. The cheek on this man! “I told the guard to hang back and wait for my signal if they did not arrive to you being slaughtered in the street. It seems they have done so, thank the gods. We don’t need that lot making a scene if we can help it. The last thing we need is a public revolt with your would-be assassins. This is a small group. I am certain of it. Operating in the shadows. But if the whole port witnesses the royal guard involved in a brawl… well… people will use the opportunity to sow further unrest.”

“Does that mean you can’t yell at me?”

Despite herself, she felt the corner of her mouth twitch up. “Do not push your luck, Your Royalness.”

Louise and Logan fight their way out of the docks. One of them gets injured. Nefarious plots are further revealed. A friend is dead. And Louise proposes a tidy suggestion.

Chapter 12: Down to the Docks

“Why in all the gods’ names would you skip out on my sister’s wedding to try and get killed again?”

Logan pulled back and stared.

There, pulling the hood of her cloak down to reveal her sour face, was his lady-bride, Dame Louise Belcher.

“Louise? What in the—“

“Shut your hole,” she hissed, tugging him into a sprint with her. “The King’s guard is moments behind me but you’d best draw your dagger now. Don’t you dare get yourself killed. It will rob me the joy of wringing your selfish neck.”

Logan plans to run. Caleb helps him scheme. Louise, of course, saves the day.

Chapter 11: Flight from Feeling

Louise turned back to Logan and pinched the bridge of her nose, closing her eyes, “—this isn’t a good time.”

Logan nodded, looking over Louise’s head to see the sad, curled form of her sister. “Is she alright? I assisted with what I could downstairs but thought perhaps…” he gestured to Tina.

Louise bit the corner of her lip. It wasn’t funny, really, but imagining Logan trying to talk her love-struck, emotional sister down just felt a bit comical. “You are too kind, sir, but I’m afraid Lady Tina is in need of some sisterly-bonding,” she whispered.

He narrowed his eyes skeptically and lowered his voice as well. “And what, pray tell, does that consist of for you? Sparring? Rounds of defense training? Engaging in a good battle cry?”

She scrunched her nose and slapped his arm, but the curve of her mouth gave her away. “Oy! I’ll have you know I’m very comforting and reassuring.”

“Of course you are, princess. The model of charity and good-will.”

Louise has her own thoughts after The Kiss. Her family weighs in on their thoughts regarding Logan. Louise is confronted with stark realizations and an upsetting surprise.

Chapter 10: The Best Laid Plans...

“It was my grandfather’s,” Louise whispered to his right and his eyes flitted to her. She clasped her hands in front of her awfully tight and Logan nodded. 

“Most remarkable.”

“It is not fine. Our estate is not fine. We do not have the gla—“

But Logan stood directly in front of her, his hand came up of its own accord to grasp her arm. “I am not comparing your family home to the castle.” 

Louise looked at him, shrewd and assessing. She let out a breath and her shoulder sagged in relief. A damnedable part of himself couldn’t quite help taking the piss though.

“But if I were to compare them, there is absolutely no contest.” She went rigid again and he wanted to laugh outright before adding silkily, “House Belcher would much be my preference.”

Louise’s eyes cut to him and she slapped him. “Do not jest! You—“

“I do not jest! Your family’s estate is beautiful. More in the country. Less cavernous empty space reminding me of my dratted loneliness. Much less like a mausoleum than the castle,” he squeezed her hand. “I much prefer this, I can assure you of that. “

Logan spirals in the wake of The Kiss and confers with Caleb about his plans. Louise and Logan journey to the Belcher estate to help Lady Tina prepare for her wedding.

Chapter UPDATE for my Medieval AU Louigan fic!

Chapter 9: En Guard or Unguarded?

“Show me your stance.”

He was still chuckling when he dropped into a traditional fencing opening stance.

“Wrong,” Louise hummed, and his brows pulled down, mouth opening in rebuke.

“I beg to–” but he was unable to conclude his statement as it had taken Louise all of a moment to shift into his space, knock him off balance with a leg sweep, and take him down to the ground. Logan landed sprawled on his back, the wind knocked from his lungs. Louise followed him down and drew her wooden training sword, crouching over him, the blade’s tip pressed to his neck.

He was but a hand’s breadth away, breath coming in rapid pants. Her hand was on his chest for balance and her thigh pressed along his abdomen as she hovered over him.

She felt warmth rise in her cheeks, cleared her throat, and stood. “Your stance must be open and balanced, ready for attack but not inviting it. You are not in a fencing competition, Logan. You are trying to defend and disarm against attackers who will show no mercy nor play by any set of rules. Reset.”

He shook himself then rolled back up onto his feet looking freshly determined and her mouth curved.

“Ready?”

“Do your worst, Belcher.”

She couldn’t stop the grin blossoming over her face. Oh, she would.

Louise trains Logan. Logan introduces Louise to his final, most intimidating, advisor. Louise and Logan share a tender moment.

“I am afraid.”

He felt her hand encircle his wrist and squeeze. “Logan, you have an avenging murderous cult hellbent on killing you. You’ve every right to—“

“No. It’s not that. Well—not just that,” he clarified. And damn it all, he felt split open and raw in this moment, might as well throw caution to the wind.
