Lemonade by Louis Tomlinson
Idk about other solos, but what I want is for the primary driver of people going to his shows to be to see HIM and hear HIS music. I don’t want the loudest, most passionate part of his shows to be the 1D songs. I love 1D, and I’d love if it was just 1-2 covers and he had more of his solo music. I think this issue is more complex than other solos and Larries/OT5s both want to admit. I’ve talked to many Larries/OT5s privately, and they are willing to readily admit Louis needs to change or progress because his current fans are either hanging on for nostalgia, limiting personal expressive and creative growth, or they are bored of the sammmme stuff all the time. I don’t know why those points are controversial in either side.
I think most of those of us who watch all the streams or travel around go to 20 shows a year feel similarly- but it's NOT ABOUT US!! I'm pretty sure that when he plays festivals that setlist isn't about the fans up front it is, as solos are always saying they want, to get OTHER PEOPLE interested, people who might not even know his solo music, or who might just be less um... engaged... fans. And those people are going to be more hooked in and excited about the set as a whole if they get to go "OH I KNOW this one!!" and sing along a little, people like that feeling! The first step to turning randos and casual fans into proper fans is to get their attention and make them feel good, and familiar nostalgic songs DO that. THEN they will be in a mood to pay attention and realize they like the other songs too and seek them out! IDK I feel like there's this weird thing where people at the same time think he should be working harder to bring in more casual fans and that he should be catering more to the hardcore fanbase, but those are two opposite things with different demands; and honestly I think he's doing a great job balancing them (as evidenced by the growth in his audience). He does have to work at that in a way other artists don't I think; as we know having his career built on such a rabid loyal following is pretty unique butttttt..... eh maybe I'll come back to this thought whatever. ANYWAY..... But also how many times does it have to be said THAT IS HIS MUSIC and gosh idk maybe he's kind of proud of having written the biggest hits of the biggest band in the world like jfc do people roll their eyes if Paul McCartney plays Beatles songs at shows??!!* THOSE ARE ALSO HIS SONGS THAT HE HIMSELF WROTE THOSE ARE HIS SONGS THEY AREN'T COVER SONGS HE FUCKING DID THAT TOO THAT WAS HIS BAND HE OWNED THAT SHIT HE MADE IT WHAT IT WAS
a moment for the leather pants
I respect your desire to support Louis no matter what. I really do. And I also respect Louis’ way of approaching life where he says you never know what you can have until you try. He definitely lives it. But I think the writing has been on the wall for the way he has gone about his promo and public image for the last couple of years. And it’s clear his fans aren’t happy with it and are leaving. It’s hard to watch that when you care about someone like his fans genuinely care about him. He’s just being stubborn or too lazy to make a change I guess.
Totally. It’s a conversation I’ve been part of for the past few months. Louis has reached a very comfortable point in his career, I mean that he really doesn’t take his work that seriously anymore. Like, he’s about to perform at a venue like MSG, his first iconic venue as a solo artist, and his voice still sounds questionable. We saw it at the Live Lounge, and don’t even get me started on the vocal editing for Amazon Music. I truly believe he’s a great artist and has a powerful voice. And I also think he could reach a general audience. But he’s just not interested in doing that anymore.
I know this sounds contradictory, but let me explain, this is how I see things rationally, and as a fan. Rationally and from a completely objective perspective, I really doubt he’s going to get a good reputation if he stays this comfortable. There’s no point in showing up on radio, in programs, in interviews, and being likable if, when it’s time to sing, he’s not going to attract new listeners because he doesn’t sing well, or doesn’t hit the notes, or does nothing but stand in front of the mic reading the lyrics off the floor and drinking from his cup every ten minutes.
But he has one huge advantage: no matter how much his fandom shrinks, he will always have a fandom, and that fandom tends to applaud everything he does no matter what. That’s why you see him less concerned about his career.
And as a fan, I probably will never be able to stop watching him and supporting him, because my mind always goes back to all the times I felt lost and seeing him, consuming his content, helped me. So I’m part of that fandom that allows him to stay comfortable.
So there’s nothing to do. If Louis really wants to grow in his career and not stay stuck with a fandom that excuses everything, he needs to take his voice seriously and discipline himself. Or not, and keep “trying” in a superficial way, relying on a fandom that doesn’t really help him grow if they don’t criticize him constructively and push him to improve
Niall was the last of them to see Liam, and the first to tell the others he was gone.
