she had remained seated but as she heard footsteps in the hall behind her, isabeau turned her head and rose, ignoring the pain emanating from her feet. another wracking cough escaped her lips and she shook her head only once before a face came into view. the handkerchief crumpled in her fingers and fell to the floor. something akin to a sob rose in her chest, though it did not escape.
and yet the relief that came over isabeau upon seeing louis was palpable; her chin quivered and her eyes welled with the tears she had not allowed herself to release. “mon petit monstre,” she breathed out as she inched toward him, her hands moving to louis’ shoulder, his cheekbones, his chest, as if to assure her that he was safe. “i was so worried.” isabeau’s forehead pressed to his chest for a brief moment before her spine straightened and she pulled back, her eyes shining as tears escaped them. “do not frighten me like that again. i shan’t ever forgive you if i must join you in hell because you did not receive last rites.” the words may have sounded serious on their own, but they were punctuated with desperation as the sob isabeau had been holding back finally released.
